Should kids be allowed to see 18 rated movies?

I don't have permission to do Polls (Mods?) but I thought I'd ask..

I remember back in 1989 when the original Robocop came out on VHS, it was 18 rated (for obvious reasons), and I was about 13 at the time and someone brought the video into school and lent it us.

Watched it and wasn't scared at all, on the contrary I was laughing at all the bad words/swearing.

So anyway, should 18 rated movies be viewed by younger people? I do believe the BBFC rating system's a bit out-dated to be honest, back in 1984 they rated the original Gremlins 15 when it could've quite easily been a PG IMO.

Thoughts?

    I remember me and my friends being as young as 12 maybe even 11 watching 18+ movies back in the 80's. The Nightmare on Elm Street films, Fright Night, Evil Dead, Friday the 13th films, sex films etc. As far as I'm aware it never did any of us any harm. I never got scared by them as at the end of the day I was aware that they're just all actors and people/monsters like that don't exist in real life, I just didn't like seeing the gore which I still don't now at the age of 50.

    It's not just about whether a child will be scared by, it's whether they should be exposed to some of the content.

    Don't get me wrong, I was playing games rated above my age and my children have seen films rated for older ages, but I wouldn't say it should blanketly apply for all children and all films/games. What would be the point of age certification or safeguards at all?

    An unscrupulous shop keeper, one who sold us drink and smokes at 13, it was thanks to him that I saw any films at all! My parents were church goers, and quite strict.

    Did you ever see Freddy vs Jason? I saw it a few months ago and I liked it, although it's pretty unpopular.

    Some video games, such as the Call of Duty series, are 18 rated yet I know for a fact kids still play them.
