Another UC/Vinted question.

Hi all, I'll TRY to keep this short and sweet.

I'm disabled, on UC and ADP, the "not required to look for work" limited work capability. I am quite limited in what I can handle pain and environment wise.

For the past few years I have been selling on Vinted. Mainly personal items, sometimes at profit, but there have been some things I have bought explicitly to sell on.

There is…so much confusion around what to do regarding this.

I understand that if I'm selling personal possessions, I have nothing to worry about unless I make 6K in a single transaction, which I absolutely will never. I also understand if I make (before outgoings) £1000 selling things I bought JUST to sell, I need to contact HMRC. For ages I had read this was only to be done when you make 1K in profit.

I'm fast approaching this threshold for the year. I am on nearly the highest ADP and UC. I want to work sooner than later, eventually run a small business making jewellery, but in the mean time buying and selling would help to fund my jewellery education in order to run this business.

I worry if I register as a sole trader I'll be kicked off my benefits. I am told I won't be, but it seems like even DWP employees themselves don't understand the rules around this subject.

I recognise logically that my ADP could potentially get lowered as it's listed that I have problems with money and maths, and I definitely still do, I have been researching this topic for over a year and been worried sick trying to figure out how I can make my way to self employment without being punished for it. That said I know the DWP were extremely black and white with PIP, and I fear ADP could be like that too. I worry they'll think I'm lying or magically capable of complex maths.

Can anyone ease my worries? There's so much misinformation on the topic out there. I have a friend in a similar situation and she is self employed and simply has to fill out an income and expenditure form each month, but I was hoping for more evidence that it'll be okay, than just her experience.

    Hi @MissConfused I think this very much depends on how much you're selling and I can see from your comment you're aware that you are soon to reach this annual threshold for self-employed status.

    I've not done this myself, but I know we've a few members on here that have. Hopefully they'll be able to provide their advice/experience. 😊
