Doctor sent my dad home, 2 days later he had a stroke. do we have a case?

My dad is 61. A few weeks ago he suddenly had slured speech, dizziness, and weakness in his right arm. we took him to the ER, but the doctor said it was probably stress or anxiety and sent him home. About 2 days later, his condition got much worse. we went back to the hospital and this time they did a CT scan, they told us he'd had a stroke. Now he has permanent weakness and needs rehab. we keep thinking. if they'd diagnosed it the first time, could this have been avoided?has anyone been through something similar? Is this something that could be considered medical malpractice, or is it just bad luck?

    @roy22 I would report it, I just don't think they'll do anything, the NHS is under-funded and over-stretched, they unfortunately probably didn't have a bed for your Dad.

    Hello Roy and welcome to Scope.

    I'm very sorry to hear about your dad and the delayed treatment following his stroke. I recommend HEADWAY (sorry, I can't do links) for excellent support and advice.

    My dad's stroke during heart surgery went unnoticed until we arrived at the hospital and speaking with experts at Headway helped me so much - he was discharged one Christmas Eve and we had no idea what to do. He regained much of his old self and I sincerely hope yours does too.

    I agree with SheffieldMan that this should be reported.

    Many years ago my late father felt ill and to cut a very long story short the drs told him it was old age ( 61) and to adapt his diet.He was a non smoker and drinker and otherwise very fit and healthy.6months later he had a massive stroke which left him totally paralysed down his right side,unable to talk,walk or recognise me for many months.After 2 years he was able to join basics words but never regained use of his arm.He could just balance on his right side but rests confirmed he'd had Tias prior to this stroke ( mini strokes) which were consistent with the symptoms he'd explained He subsequently went into hospital a year later and caught a hospital bug which ultimately killed him so I can totally sympathise with everything you and your father are going through.My advise to anyone going to hospital for Anything is Be LOUD.question everything and dont accept that what they are telling you is necessarily correct because sometimes they are incorrect.They cannot always be right.
