Getting a car PIP enhanced

Hello,

I’m considering getting a car as I believe it would give me a lot more freedom and conserve energy instead of getting buses etc.

I recieve enhanced PIP rate and I’m considering whether to get a car via the mobility scheme or sort things myself through an independent dealer. Money would be quite tight each month if I were to go through the mobility scheme.

I’d love to hear some opinions about each route and a breakdown of costs for each if possible.

I know the mobility scheme would provide less organisation/stress but money wise it’s a lot for me.

Thank you!

    Hi,

It's very difficult to breakdown costs without knowing what type of car you would be looking at and your circumstances for the insurance etc.

If you're looking at a new or nearly new car then the Motability scheme will almost certainly work out cheaper than any private lease or finance scheme.

If you're looking at an older used car, say around 10 years old, those cost a lot less to buy which would reduce your monthly payments if using finance.

If you could buy a car outright from savings then obviously there is no finance needed at all.

Without knowing your age, location, work status, etc then car insurance for you could be anywhere from £20 a month to £100 a month.

Road tax changed to a fixed rate system in 2017. So any car newer than 2017 costs the same to tax. Around £20 a month.

Breakdown cover from AA or RAC costs around £10 a month.

MOT costs £55 each year. Servicing costs around £100-£200 each year. But an older car may also need things like a clutch and cambelt at some point which are very expensive (some cambelt replacements are over £1000 on common cars). Tyres tend to cost around £70-£120 each nowadays.

With Motability you get all of that included. You only have to pay for the fuel.

Although your PIP payments would decrease, you may get more peace of mind getting a car through Motability as they sort out servicing and maintenance. Here's some information about what it includes https://www.motability.co.uk/how-it-works .

If you buy privately would you be planning on buying it outright?
