Disability hate petition
Too much hate going on.
Here is a link to the petition: Create a National Disability Hate Strategy for the UK - Petitions
I've signed the petition, but unfortunately it just seems to be about the general public hating on us, there's no mention of MP's and the media, which are the main things that are fuelling the hate in the first place.

Signed! It's so heartening to know there are other people feeling like this is going on in Britain by the Media and Politicians (Of many stripes), it has to stop. My worry is that this ongoing bombardment of propaganda will cause Ableist crimes outside, on the streets, in the towns or cities.

i have to say i have nothing but good things to say about how i have and am treated by everybody since becoming disabled

I would agree mostly, but perhaps not when I am trying to get off a train, and a herd of elephants run down the gangway placed there for me. I say nothing, but the last time the platform person loudly expressed his annoyance.
Unfortunately, I don't believe petitions make any difference.

Thank you for sharing @Ross1975

Over the years petitions have helped bring about real change, like helping to get the NHS to fund life saving Cystic Fibrosis drugs (Orkambi) after debates in Parliament, and helping to bring in Finn’s Law for service animals.

Official research shows a very different reality for disabled people across the UK. Scope's research found that 72% of disabled people had experienced negative attitudes or behaviour in the previous five years, and its research into invisible disabilities found that 1 in 4 had been accused of faking their disability or being lazy. While discrimination and hate crime are technically different legally, they are both part of the wider problem of negative attitudes and stigma towards disabled people which is exactly what this petition is trying to address.

And were you able to work the required hours, did you have relevant qualifications and experience for the role? I hear every jobseeker is having a hard time these days.

If you are 50 years old, a GCSE from school is pretty irrelevant. I was told that about my Standard Grades at a job interview in the late 1990s.

Of course, doing research is No.1 in making sure that what is being said is accurate. While it is true that some disabled people may not personally experience hate or abuse, when negative things are said about disabled people on benefits by MPs, the media, and people online, etc, for example 'Disabled people on benefits are just scroungers, they should have their money stopped', etc, then ALL disabled people on benefits are being hated on.
Speak for yourself, I can certainly say that I've never pointed at or stared at someone because they have a disability, and it doesn't seem like too much of a stretch for me to not be the only one.

I think it can be important not to discount other people's experiences, even if yours is different. While I'm sure some people haven't ever experienced hate crimes or abuse, lots of other disabled people have. I think Scope's statistics were already mentioned in this thread somewhere but there's some data here from our Attitudes research:

It's nice to hear that so many of you have had positive experiences and I hope that continues to be the case. But as mentioned above, working towards ending hate benefits everyone, even if you're not currently experiencing it.
While one petition may not always mean immediate change, it can start a conversation or increase visibility for the next time an issue gets mentioned. The more conversations we have about something and the more attention it gets, the more likely we might see people making positive changes in the future ☺️

I didn't really mean the fact that the GCSEs were from school, 1996 was still 30 years ago, they are historic qualifications by now. Incidentally, my exams from school were nothing to shout about, the results were very average.
I suppose it may not matter as much for so-so-called entry level jobs, but nowadays, employers want to know what further qualifications one has earned as the years pass: in my case I obtained an LGV and a PCV licence, which was better than nothing I suppose.

I think if certain political figures didnt class us all as scroungers and pulling a fast one, would help. If they bother to look at certain conditions eg autism and adhd, as well as physical conditions. To see how it,effects us, instead of jumping to the wrong conclusions. They know by slating the disabled would be headline news and justify their discrimination actions for cuts knowing that we are easy targets. By doing this and the media portraying us a fake. The general public would focus on us. So it would distract from them being incompetent.

I really don't think anyone would be callous and uninformed enough to suggest that the residents of care homes are shirking?

Oversharing personal information encourages trolls. Tell others only what they need to know.

I’m 78, use a walking aid and have several health problems. Most people are tolerant. I find the lack of public toilets limiting. Bromley Council said it limited. People spending money at a time when local businesses want people to buy locally. Taxpayers money is often spent locally by disabled people. We are an inclusive part of society.

Stop being so hard on yourself, as long as you know the issues that act as a barrier to work, that's all that matters. We can't control what others think.

Signed it. Mostly we've had good experiences.. There's been a few times I've had things said to me that are abuseive. Or my gf has had muttered 'she's faking it' if she has to adjust her wheelchair on the bus or train. She's an ambulatory chair user.
There's a few cases of people with Motability vehicles getting abuse or damage to the car (I had to correct someone who helps us with cleaning that we are not 'given' a car!
Its worrying with the likes of Reform coming out with some very sinister proposals.
We can only bang a louder drum & hope people see sense.
Current Labour isn't perfect in any way but lesser of etc. And they do appear to be going in the right direction in some ways.
Andi66 has it spot on tho, we are the low hanging fruit, the easy targets for those who thrive on misinformation and division for their own own gain0 -
My ex wife sits on the side of questioning my disabilities - as she turned around to me on multiple occasions and said “You Don’t Want To Get Better” as well as this I had a GP turn around to me after looking into my old medical records and said “You don’t have Cerebral Palsy, ADHD, ASD and at a later date when as a child You showed no symptoms of any of them” the latter sent me off work for two months. The ex was always telling me I hadn’t got any of those conditions and reminded me that the GP told me so!! Fair to say it always ended up in a massive argument.
I mean I would know about having those conditions having lived with them since birth and them being on my medical records. I have seen how people can be judgemental and opinionated in many ways, especially my own father who had anger issues, a nasty temper and it is fair to say I never had a relationship with him.
Since being forced out of work as a Support Worker in 2020, my health has declined dramatically to where I am now a Service User living in an adapted flat. I have been using a Rollator since June, I have noticed quite a few elderly people giving me filthy looks as much to say “what are you doing with that, you don’t need it” or having another woman telling me to fold my rollator up on the bus when it was easier for to sit elsewhere so as I could place my Rollator where she was sat and I could let a Wheelchair in.
I often think the biggest judgemental person is myself, I am always battling with myself and questioning do I need to be living in a flat with adaptations. Questioning every single decision I make right down to a microscopic detail. I look around the flat and think I can do this or I can do that, then have to again put my foot down and say no you can’t do it. I am a proud man but this year I have now started to ask for help with public transport and now I am starting to think of operating my life as if I am a third person and use myself as my own support worker. My mental health fluctuates every day, I don’t even know who is gonna be waking up in the morning.I hate being on benefits and not being able to work. It is something that I am always at a quarry with and question all the time. I take things personally and to heart very easily and can get angry over the smallest of things. I have always been told that I think that I am always in the right.
Since 2011 I have had family members pass away who I never got to say goodbye to, I have had two failed relationships and marriages, I have had to cut contact with family and also lost friends over my last marriage break up and also had no choice but to close off contact with all friends. I have now purposely severed all links to social media as it makes me ill if I go on there. I choose to live behind closed doors, shut away from the world.
