Nostalgic meals
Here I am talking about food again. No cold peas this time, I promise 😂
What are some meals that hold strong memories for you?
For me it's Cornish pasties. Even the smell of them takes me back to holidays at my Granny's house when I was little.
The other day I bought some potato smiley faces and that felt really nostalgic too.
Is there anything you still eat now that brings back good memories? Or if not, what are some nostalgic meals that you remember from previous eras?

Rabbit stew, we were a family of 7, my father did whatever he had to do to feed the family, we had everything going, pigs, goats, chickens, geese, vegetable gardens, apple orchards, we lived off the land, my mother was the BEST cook ever, my father bread rabbits to export the meat, always remember her rabbit stew 🥘

Loved the minty custard @Rag_793! Did you have the pink custard as well? Someone once told me that they used to just water down blancmange for the different colour custards at school. The pink or green were always my favourites!
What would they serve with the banana custard @WhatThe? Did you also get cake?
I loved chocolate concrete at school, did anyone have that? I found a recipe for it here in case anyone fancies recreating it:

Ooh @Rag_793, I've never had mint custard, I didn't know such thing existed but I would've loved that!
Pasta bake is very nostaglic for me as we always used to have it at least once a week growing up and also nutrigrain bars🤣 I wonder if they still sell those, I feel like I haven't seem them around in a while!1 -

The Mint Custard is from my Infant & Junior school days in the late 80s and early 90s.
for me a truly nostalgic meal is Rag Pudding, Chips and Mushy Peas ❤️
My late Grandma used to make them when I was young, she learnt how to cook while serving in the WAAF in WW2 as a cook on RAF Jurby.
The Cooking Cloth: Invented during the 19th century in the Oldham and Rochdale areas of Northern England, the dish pre-dates modern ceramic cooking basins or plastic boiling bags
The Process: Cooks wrapped the minced meat and onion filling encased in suet pastry tightly inside a cloth rag tied with string, then submerged the parcel directly in boiling water.
Working-Class Origins
This Simple, Hearty technique made cheap cuts of meat go a long way to feed local mill workers.
The "Rag": The Oldham mill town tradition used floured cotton or muslin
The Filling: It typically consists of minced meat (beef) and onions encased in a savoury suet pastry.
The Cooking Method: The wrapped and tied pudding is submerged and boiled or steamed in water, which allows the floured cloth to form a skin on the pastry

Whenever i have full sugar coke, which is not often, it reminds me of being on holiday because that was the only time i was allowed it as a kid. As for food, i remember school dinners were pretty good, especially the puddings! So chocolate sponge with strawberry custard was amazing, but whenever i try to recreate it, it just never tastes as good…….🤨

I'm so happy to see you mention chocolate concrete @Rosie_Scope! I used to love it so much. My friend actually made me some a few years ago and it was delicious.
I never used to like the school dinners. The mashed potato still gives me nightmares 🤢

School dinners again, oop North in the 70's: my favourite was roast lamb and mint sauce with roast potatos and peas.
The 'lamb' was thinly sliced and probably definitely mutton dressed as lamb (!), but delicious with the gravy and mint sauce.
Also scraps with fish and chips from the chippy, delish.

Yes scraps @Scooby222! I had a chip butty with scraps the other day and it was so good. My husband once forgot the scraps and I was genuinely quite sad 😂 He also calls them 'bits' which I found strange. We're both from Yorkshire so I didn't think there would be a difference.

We used to say 'bits' as well, although a couple of mates when i was young called them scraps. In fact near where i used to live the chippy was actually called Wibbits!! 🤩
