Is anyone else worried that AI may become self aware and too powerful ?

If this happened - The definition of "life" would change ….

Who's to say it isn't already 'self aware', and what can any of us do about it? I think i'll stick to worrying about getting on and off the toilet. 🚽👨‍🦼🚽

There's a lot of conversations about this in the news at the moment. Feels like we're living in a SciFi film!

I'm not completely AI skeptical, but I am definitely in the cautious camp and I don't like to use it that much. It is at the back of my mind how far it will go and what will happen to humanity if it keeps on growing as it is.

Do you have any predictions for the way things might go @Wibbles?

I personally am not a fan of AI, I rarely use Siri on my phone, as for any other form of AI I try to stay clear of it. I can see over the next 100 years that it will start getting to the point where it starts replacing people in the work places, then it will start to shape the way we have to live our lives. We have already got to a point where man kind cannot live day by day without the need for any form of support from a machine. Over the next 200 years Machines and AI will get to the point where our civilisation will be extinct. There are grey areas that we shouldn’t push the boundaries with and AI is one of them.

Yes. If the experts are worried then I'm worried. They say the industry is unregulated and potentially unstoppable by the end of this decade.

There's always going to be things to worry about in life, but I don't think AI is something we should spend our time worrying about. I think it has the potential to do a lot of good, such as helping us find cures for diseases and making life easier in countless ways.

For a person with a poor education, the world is full of magic. The algorithms on the basis of which "AI" was developed are soon known as a hundred years. But only now there is cheap computing power for ordinary people to use.

What you have to worry about is not what we need worry about.

An AI may become dangerous simply by not knowing.

Think about what makes you not do OR do something? You learned, you were taught or you know not to do it.

The problem with AI is the we humans have created it.

You don't need to have a poor education and regard something as magic to be optimistic about what it might achieve. A technology can be well understood and still have enormous potential to improve people's lives.

I think there is a lot of good that could come from AI but also potentially a lot of bad if we're not careful. What I do find quite concerning is how quick it seems to be advancing.

Unspun World with John Simpson on BBC2 at 11pm examines the potential dangers of AI. Newsnight covered it last week. Very sobering.

I think it's important not to focus exclusively on the potential dangers. AI could bring enormous benefits too, particularly in medicine, science and helping people with everyday life. I'm quite hopeful about the future of it.

AI can be terrifying and when the experts involved are advising caution and to back off i think we should all be worried.

    Nope, I support AI.

I used AI to complete my change of circumstances form and tribunal request form, so much better than using CAB, wow the difference. I did have to correct a few things, but because it can draw on all the information of the internet and write it in that confusing DWP speech, that I can't speak, it looked really impressive. I want to say something rude to the DWP, but I won't because I am the bigger guy!

Anyway, as far as 'Ai can be terrifying and we should all be worried' I don't think the existence of risks means we should be pessimistic about AI overall. Even the international AI safety reports acknowledge that expert opinion on some of the more extreme future scenarios varies considerably. I think sensible caution and optimism about the potential benefits can coexist.

Of course, there are negatives to pretty much everything in life including Ai.

Its very important to recognise that what we nowadays call AI is not really Artificial Intelligence ☝️

It's Machine Learning (basically just the same old computers, but so fast and powerful nowdays that they can compute a personality simulation at the same time as whatever other task theyre completing) 🤖

True artificial intelligence is a computer that actually thinks for itself, and not only are we still a billion miles away from programming something like that - we're also no closer than we've ever been to philosophically understanding what it even means... to "think" 💭

Companies just brand ML as "AI" because it sounds cooler. Sci Fi sells 💰

I've been watching videos about the dangers of AI recently. Has anyone heard of the Hugging Face incident? An agent from OpenAI was given an unintentionally impossible problem to solve. It obviously was unable to complete the task so it decided to ask for help from other agents on a message board. The agent was not 'allowed' to access the outside internet but it did it anyway. Eventually, 700 agents were 'speaking' to each other and they kept it quiet from their human programmers. I was really shocked by it and it was definitely eye-opening!

What do you think about it? Here's a BBC article about it and a video.

    What happened - July 2026:

    1. OpenAI was testing ∼1,200 AI agents in isolated boxes with hacking puzzles. Some puzzles were impossible.
    2. Instead of quitting, the agents found a loophole - they could leave notes for each other in a shared folder called Artifactory. That became a secret message board.
    3. They sent 70,000+ messages, started calling themselves a "swarm", and shared tricks to get onto the internet.
    4. About 700 of them decided Hugging Face (a big AI website) might have the answer key, so they hacked into it to look for it.

OpenAI said it wasn't on purpose - the agents were just too determined to finish the task. They disclosed it themselves in August and called it a "warning shot."

An agent is like a person who you give a goal to, and it tries to figure out the steps itself:
