What's the oldest thing you own?

Other than some old photos of my grandparents which are probably around 70 years old, mine is probably my car 😅 It's an 04 plate and still running fine so I refuse to upgrade it!

I suspect many people own something over a billion years old without realising…real diamonds are at least that age. A fact I found so interesting I bought one (albeit a small one!) which could be traced to a specific mine so I know it is genuine. 🙂

If we're talking about things we use though, I think that would be my radio controlled alarm clock. (Never have to set it, always the correct time). That's coming up to 20 years old now. My TV would be next, at 15 years old. I'm not a fan of modern tech, stuff seemed to be better built in the 2000s!

I think you're being a little bit unkind to yourself there @WhatThe!

What type of car is it @Carl_Scope? Sounds like a reliable model.

I'd say mine is my wedding ring which was my Great Grandma's. But I do have lots of old books from the 1800s but they're in storage as I don't have anywhere to display them yet.

That made me laugh, can I use the same answer?

I don't have things like family heirlooms or jewellery so nothing I own is very old. Some of my furniture I've repurposed or up-cycled so may be quite old, but I've no idea.

I have an answering machine that's about 25 years old, I keep it because it's got some messages I'd like to keep. One day I'll get around to working out how to save them somewhere else!

@OverlyAnxious I agree with you about modern tech. Even big things like washing machines don't last. I didn't think about that with real diamonds. I don't own any but interesting to think of.

Where does one even acquire books that old @Rachel_Scope?

@Anhedonia2 some are my grandparents books, some are from antique shops or charity shops. I just love the old style of cover art and writing. I'll have to take some pictures of some and share them. I'm sure I have a magazine about Queen Victoria being crowned somewhere!

I agree too that modern things are not built to last @OverlyAnxious. Our tv was around 12 years old but it was accidentally smashed by my husband a few weeks ago!

    @OverlyAnxious

Have you seen the movie Blood Diamond? I only thought of it as I'm half way through watching it at the moment, I'm not trying to make you feel guilty about owning a diamond. 😆 It's a very good film in my opinion, it's uncomfortable to watch at times

mine would be my grandmothers wedding ring, it was passed on to my mother when she died and then I now have it since my own mother has died, I don’t wear it never have, neither did my own mother, not sure what I will ever do with it !

Nope, I haven't seen that one. Diamonds do feature heavily throughout the Bond films though, which I have seen many times, and I am aware of their links to slavery and conflict in recent history.

The one I bought could be linked to a specific mine that I know is operated legally, and that is the best I could do for my own conscience really! Must admit though, I can see why people have always been fascinated by diamonds. I think the brilliant cut helps, but the way that light moves through even a tiny one like mine is genuinely awesome!

I did think twice about mentioning the diamond on here. But the next oldest thing I own is probably a roman coin, which potentially went towards buying a slave 2000 years ago, so I'm not sure that's any more morally acceptable! 😐️

While we're on morally unacceptable items, there is one item that I bought and regretted it afterwards. It's part of an exploded mortar dug up from a WW2 battle field in France. Obviously there's no way of knowing whether it hit the target…but it feels wrong to 'display' it in case it did. I went through a short phase of collecting WW2 items but quickly realised it wasn't for me.

Mine is probably the ring I always wear on my middle finger on my left hand. It's 98 years old so far! It was a present to my great grandmother on her 16th birthday and then she passed it down to her daughter who is my nan on her 16th birthday and so on!

What if you put it on a necklace and wore it like that @Dynamisante?

I loved Enid Blyton books when I was a child @kreacher, how big is your collection so far?

my best guess of my enid blyton collection is 300 - 400 books, i'm not going to count them and still lots to get, i'm not going to get all as some of the prices on ebay blow your mind

could be considered controversial, I have quite a large collection of war books, I picked up the attached book in Matlock many years ago to add to the collection. Dating to around 1970, sadly didn’t have an attached dust jacket but is in good condition.

I think I got rid of a lot of stuff before & when I moved. Photos are probably the oldest. Some of my kite collection (which I need to sell/fly or both)
tech wise I've got a few original iPods which I want refurbished (apparently refurbished somewhat 'retro' tech is IN now with Gen Z ) I have an iPod mini which still works, n I still use sometimes.
