Next week, the University of Leeds is hosting a public panel debate on the representation of diability & disability history in museums.
Through exhibitions and public programmes, museums today are powerful sites for promoting the cultural identity of different local community groups. But how have museums and heritage sites defined and represented disability? Do those with disabilities share a common history and cultural identity? How well represented are those with disabilities within museum settings?
Displays of historic disability appliances – from prosthetic appliances to hearing aids – have long failed to present how fulfilling the lives of those with disabilities in the past could be, but what alternatives have museums attempted in order to better represent the multiple histories of disability? Join us for a public panel debate about how museums and heritage sites across Britain have responded to these important questions.
