We've just published a blog from Alice Boardman about a book she's written - Toast:
http://blog.scope.org.uk/2014/10/17/toast-one-word-which-holds-so-much-meaning/
In the book Alice answers all the questions she wanted to ask when her sons were diagnosed on the autistic spectrum - it's packed full of great advice. We've got a copy of the book to give away, if you'd like a chance to win it, tell us:
What's the most useful piece of advice you've received?

That.... 'Just because I cannot speak, doesn't mean I have nothing to say'.... Wise words I heard at a NAS conference, and this relates so strongly to all the non verbal students I've ever worked with as an SLT. Communication stretches far beyond the means of speech, and more parents and professionals need to recognise that, so we can begin to nurture those on the spectrum into using the most effective means of communication that works for them... Whether that be speech, sign, AAC or even just recognising the rare moments of affection... And taking time to consider that that awkward hug, just might mean 'mummy, I love you'0
