Hi, my name is Phyll and I have become a carer

I am very new to being a carer as my hubby has only recently become quadriplegic and has not yet left hospital.
It still all feels quite unreal and is happening to somebody else.
Have tried to get support from SS, but they won't engage with us
Sorry for rambling x

Hi @Phyll:
Welcome to the Community.
I'm sorry to hear about your husband's injury.
No need to apologise for rambling. You'll find this a safe, supportive environment where you can connect with others who have been through similar situations and where you can get advice and information. You may find the discussions in our Parents and Carers group helpful.
When you contacted Social Services what did they say? Were they waiting on a hospital discharge plan or something?

You don't have to be sorry.
I don't know if I can provide an insight or a solution but I will definitely pray that your husband gets better very soon. Not all who wander are lost! -
Hey @Phyll welcome to the community - it's not surprising you feel a bit overwhelmed, this is a big change in your lives and must be difficult for you both.
I would certainly speak to the hospital before he is discharged to make sure you have all the support and equipment you need at home. What have social services said to you?

Thanks , SS won't even speak to me as we are currently in a hospital out of our area. So they keep trying to put it on each other's caseload. When the Matron got involved they eventually opened a case file in our home town and said when he is near discharge they will speak to us.
So he is now being discharged to a rehab centre (just awaiting a bed) and everyone else is communicating with us apart from SS -
How stressful for you! If you wanted to get some more personal advice, you can call the Scope helpline on 0808 800 3333Scope

Hi Phyll. You are in a similar position to me! I don't know how your husband became quadriplegic, but mine sustained a spinal cord injury last year. The rehab centre were super helpful when he got there (social services remained not so helpful for us) and provided tons of patient education and advice which has helped us to move forwards. There are also some good specialist charities that can help (and I'm sure there will be others for other types of disability). If you still need any advice or just a listening ear please let me know! I hope his rehab is going well.
