my son is having his leg amputated in sept 2017, he works and lives with us for the time being, he has applied for a council property, will he be able to claim for housing benefits and what sort of other benefits will he be eligible for, he hopefully wants to return back to work as a support worker.

Housing benefit depends on his income. The other benefits he can apply for, depends on whether he can work and whether he has care and /or mobility needs that will last for 3 months and expect to last for another 9.
