I think my 19 year old is on the spectrum but he has no diagnosis. What would the advantages be of getting a diagnosis at his age? Would a diagnosis help him find a job? He spends all of his time in his room and can't cope with talking to people he doesn't know.1

As Danny says, the advantages to being formally assessed include having it 'in writing' so that others are obliged to make necessary adjustments to accommodate you.NAS have some good information about how to go about it here
For what it's worth, I wasn't diagnosed until 18 months ago, when I was 46. It's been a massive help, purely because it's made me realise that I'm not a terrible person who can't always cope with being an adult - there are concrete reasons behind why I sometimes behave the way I do. It's meant that I've finally learnt to give myself a break!
