Hello, we are in the process of adopting a little one with Quad CP. What help is available to us therapeutically/financially to help raise this beautiful little one?

Hello @mopsy and welcome to the community.

Financially a lot will depend on your circumstances. For example you will probably be able to get child benefit and DLA, if you get child tax credit for your child you may be entitled to enhanced child tax credit, but you would need to inform the tax office.

You may also be able to get grants from time to time depending on your needs and situation, a good way of checking for this would be to use https://grants-search.turn2us.org.uk

There are non financial ways that charities may be able to assist. For example if you have a local toy library, these can often be good sources of information about other local charities, as can your local library and councillors.

Special Kids in the UK is a charity aimed at supporting parents of special need children. They are primarily online but are a gold mine of information and support and non judgemental. I have not had any involvement with them in recent years but they did start organising family holidays which were very popular among those who went.

Sorry, therapy wise I have no idea what support there may be.

    Hope this helps.

Does anyone have any experience of Local Authorities promising all kinds of support for adopting a child with addition needs then for them to find the support isn’t there?
I’d really appreciate some advice please as I don’t completely trust them :(

    Hi @mopsy Congratulations!!
I would take a look at the benefits calculator to see what you could be entitled to. Also check the grants link that @Geoark shared.

There is quite a bit of information on the NHS website here, they say:

During the adoption process, it is important to find out what support package will come with your child to help with any special or additional needs they may have.
Some needs may not become apparent until later, perhaps during adolescence, so it's important that you know where to go should you need support at any time.
Adoptive families have a legal right, as and when they request it, to a Statutory Assessment of Support Needs from the local authority responsible for their post-adoption support. The assessment covers a range of needs, from mental health and the need for therapeutic services to additional support during a child's education.
This is in addition to the financial benefits and allowances that all families, depending on their circumstances, are entitled to.
    Find out more about:
    Adoption pay and leave
    Adoption Allowance
    Child Benefit and tax credits
    Disability Living Allowance for children
    Carer's Allowance
    Adoption Support Fund
Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS)
    It's All About Me (IAAM)
    Education and adopted children
    Other sources of post-adoption support
