You are an inspiration! Thank you so much. I will show my son your videos. Did you have a teacher or was you self taught? Rae ?RaeWitter Thank you so much ! This is the best compliment you can do!I took private snare drum lessons when I was 7 years old and then at the age of 9 I started taking drum lessons with the same teacher.Today I am a drummer in several bands and I always take drum lessons to improve myself (we are never too good ;-) ) always with this teacher who is a friend above all today.Where the story is cool is that in addition to my bands, I have to replace my teacher when he is not available on some gig with one of his bands!
How old is your son, is he playing drums?3 -
This is brilliant. Thank you for all your help @ben62.1

Hi Everyone,
Wow what an interesting post!
I have Spastic CP and I play drums and percussion as well. I started playing drums at the age of 11, although did not start learning properly until I was 14. By the time I was 19-20 I began to find my own path and by this time, had fewer lessons. I played in a couple of bands with my mates in my late teens early 20s.
My CP has affected my right side so I play drums left handed. As this has already been mentioned, sticks are all the same size, it is the weight you should be looking out for. I.e. 5A is standard weight. You also have 7A which is a lighter weight, although I apreciate in your case, your son would want something a bit heavier to support his grip.
The links under the resources section on The Hemihelp website may help you find a drummer teacher or a musical organisations or groups - links are towards the bottom of the page.

Sound Sense offers a database of teacher musicians

You might also want to look at YouTube at videos of Benjamin Balair a French Drummer with Hemiplegia.
Hope this helps - Let us know how your son gets on
Following Stayce post above are there any organisations on that list for disabled musicians who would like to get to gether and jam? I will however check them out!
Hi from France !
I am Benjamin "the French Drummer" ;-)
I just found on this page totally by chance by "searching" my name on Google, what a surprise to be mentioned here!
I don’t know if your question is still relevant, but if my experience can help you, I started music when I was 7 and drums when I was 9.
Speaking of holding the drumsticks, I don’t think it should be too much trouble for your daughter. I learned the drums with classic "Vic Firth 5 A". The grip with the thumb and index finger was done naturally.
Even though my right-side wand outfit is "peculiar". As you can see from my videos, I play more with my forearm than I did with my forearm.
I can assure you that playing drums with a hemiplegia is not impossible!
Today I'm 27 years old and I'm a drummer in several rock bands.
If your daughter is interested in the drums do not hesitate to encourage her in this way!
Do not hesitate to contact me if you have additional questions ;-)
Wish you all the Best !

Thank you for your message, I'm really glad you apreciated the video!
For the moment I'm not really a "professional musician" even if objectively I have the skills, but if I have the oporunity to become it by doing more concerts it is with pleasure that I will seize the oportunity! If it interests you, I posted 2 new drum cover on my Youtube channel today :
