Self funding housing options

Hi - I'm looking for families in a similar situation to ours - my brother is 55, has spina bifida/hydrocephalus and LD/PD.  He lives in his own flat/housing association tenancy but isn't coping well and has inadequate support and we haven't been able to find a way of improving it.  He self funds, so is lucky to be able to, but there is no involvement from SS and it's hard to know where to find support and advice.  He is not able to fund residential care for the rest of his life, which would be the ideal scenario.  We are wondering if there are any other families in Cambridgeshire who also self fund, and would be interested in looking at buying a property to create a private community with shared support and some communal space too.  We have found the JMS Trust, which offers funding to groups of families for the renovation (not purchase) of a property for disabled people, but we would need to get together with a few more families who are looking for a long-term solution which will continue when parents or siblings can't do it any more. Any advice or suggestions welcome.

I don't have any experience of self-funding options but have you contacted Adult Social Care in Cambridgeshire or the Spina Bifida Association?

Hello Charlotte - thanks for the comment, I’m afraid I got absolutely nowhere. My brother is now living in residential care but it was a long and incredibly difficult journey to find it.  He now has involvement from the Local LDP with whom I had a monumental struggle just to get them to take him seriously.  He will stay in the home until his funds run out, when social services will have to step in - by no means ideal but at least he is being very well cared for and I give thanks daily that he isn’t living alone in a flat - especially now.  I do feel that there’s a lack of options for people like him - it’s either “independent” living (not) or residential care.  I hope you find a solution for your circumstances.
