Millions on benefits could get £1,040 back pay as DWP faces High Court over Covid boost

The £20 a week boost - which was introduced to support 6million families who have seen their incomes fall since March 2020 - excludes two million people who have not yet switched to Universal Credit

More than two million benefit claimants could get £1,040 in back pay if the government loses a legal battle over whether it was fair to exclude disabled people from extra Covid support.

At the start of the pandemic, Chancellor Rishi Sunak introduced a £20 a week uplift for more than six million Universal Credit claimants struggling due to Covid.

However, the boost, which was described as a lifeline, did not include those on so called ‘legacy benefits’, the majority of whom are disabled, sick or carers

That will be good if they do it  we are all liveing through the pandemic  i was lucky because I was already on universal credit I think the worst part will be if the uplift is taken away in September

Two claimants of ESA have taken it to the high court and it has been said hopefully it will be heard by the end of the year.
