insurance for a 16 year old wihth full driving licence

This is my first time posting here.
My son is 16 years old and receives higher rate PIP for mobility, subsequently because of that he has been able to learn to drive at 16. He has now passed his theory and practical test and has ordered a motability car which wont be with him until October. I am trying to find an insurance company that will cover him on my car until his arrives but cant find anyone who will cover him because of his age. They were all happy to cover him as a learner but not now he has a full licence. I have spokn to Motability in case they have any ideas and they couldn't help. Anyone have any experience or ideas with this?
Thanks
Lisa

@LesaEB, hello and welcome, if your current insurance provider won’t add your son to your policy and money is not an issue then have you tried the online quotes I expect they also will refuse or charge a heavy price. Your son may have to wait till he gets his mobility car, out of interest which brand and model is your son getting. Does he need any adaptions. It could be wiser and cheaper to let your son ride up front to get use to being in close views of driving situations.0

Hello @LisaEB
Welcome to the community, glad to see you join us. Congratulations to your son on gaining his licence but I'm sorry to hear you are finding insurance hard to come by for him.
This isn't an area I know much about, but I hope others do. I have moved your discussion to our category for transport and motoring, hopefully you are able to find a solution but if not I hope October comes around quickly0 -
My step son was haveing problems at 18 getting csr insurance at 16 you may not find any one and if you do it will probably be unaffordable at 18 the indurance was 1500.00 for the year at 20 changed to a moped alot cheaper and got insurance straight away but cbt test was 100.00 pound
He may have a better chance if he does a pass plus and has a black box put on his car and drives a 1.1
Other than that I don't know what to suggest0 -
Your son may have to wait until his mobility car comes has he got to wait for his car until he is 17 ?? I just checked on the insurance data base only one on the database I was on will accept a 16 year old and that price you could buy a car lol they are asking 5000 pound for the year and I did that on a 1.1 car using my 16 year old grandson lol he rides a moped 78.00 for the year and 13.00 tax for the year he is happy
It's easier when they are learning to drive because someone is with them when I had my first mobility car its was different you had to be 18 I learnt to drive in my mobility car so was better
Hope you find someone to insure your son0 -
Hello , my daughters just turned 16 and also gets high rate pip . What insurance company did you use for lessons ?0

I know this is an old thread, but I have to say that I`m gobsmacked that a 16 year old can legally drive a car when in receipt of enhanced mobility. I think 17 is too young to legally drive a car, let alone 16.

@Cartini I started driving a scooter when I was sixteen and so when I started driving van at seventeen I was a very careful driver. I must admit looking back I was very young to be in charge of a potentially deadly machine.
Further to the above I remember most drivers used to cruise along at about forty mph in those days, that’s fifty years ago mind.0 -

My opinion / belief / thoughts about the age of driving also extends to the age of drinking and voting.Unfortunately I (we) have no control over any of that <sigh>1 -
@Cartini I think any new driver at any age would be just as safe as the next new driver .

(for my son)Have you tried to book it online? If you can't then you can ring DVSA directly. You will need to book the theory test first because you can't book the practical until your son has passed the theory. Please note that if you can't book it online there maybe quite a wait for them to answer the phone.Help with your booking
Contact the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) to get help booking your theory test.
DVSA theory test enquiries
theorycustomerservices@dvsa.gov.uk
Telephone: 0300 200 1122
Monday to Friday, 8am to 4pm
If extra support is needed you will need to ask for this and there will be options of what extra support can be put into place. Please note that you will not be able to have the test date confirmed online. DVSA will contact you with a date/time of the theory test.

It can be difficult to find an insurance company that will cover a 16-year-old driver, even with PIP for mobility. However, there are a few options you can consider:
Add your son to your existing car insurance policy as a named driver. Some insurance companies may allow this, but you may need to pay an additional premium to cover him.
Look for specialist insurance companies that offer policies specifically for young drivers with disabilities. These companies may be more likely to cover your son, but you may still need to pay a higher premium.
Consider contacting a broker who specializes in finding insurance for young or disabled drivers. They may be able to help you find a policy that meets your needs.
Contact Motability again and ask if they have any recommendations or resources for finding insurance for young drivers with disabilities.
It's worth noting that some insurance companies may require your son to have his own car before they will cover him as a primary driver. However, this may not be feasible or necessary in your case, so be sure to shop around and ask plenty of questions to find the best option for your family.
