Hi Everyone,
I am Leighanne Higgins!
I am a researcher at Lancaster University and have been researching marketplace and commercial disability barriers since 2016. Throughout 2019, I conducted an art-based research project that asked disabled persons to create artworks that represent their experiences in the marketplace. We are currently exhibiting the artworks at Rural Arts in Thirsk, Yorkshire until the 30th of July.
If you can pop along and see us in person please do. However, for those who cannot come along please check out and subscribe to our Marketplace and I YouTube Channel where we are posting regular videos of the artworks. Here is the link to the channel: UCcVD9yT9HcvHXQ7oGPOxyYw
I have shared here an image from the exhibition. It shows some very cool and very large wheelchair painting canvases, which shares wheelchair and mobility experiences in commercial settings. The castle near the front of the image is the lovely Aurora's Castle which represents visual impairment experiences in the marketplace. In the corner, can you see the cello and cat play-area? This is a swimming installation, created by members from Piccadilly Support Services in Lancaster, to help educate the public on autism experiences in the marketplace. We have nine collections in total representing visible, hidden, cognitive, learning, mobility and sensory impairment, all showcased through song, dance, poetry, painting, sculpture and installations - so we have a little bit of everything here!
Please post any questions, thoughts, comments here and I will get back to you and please do subscribe, like or comment on the YouTube Channel too if you would like to!
Hope to hear from many of you soon and I hope this project/ exhibition will be of interest to many of you! Leighanne

Sound very cool @Grinchy. You will maybe enjoy a video coming later this week showcasing a sculpture by Grace Igoe. It is called Fitting In and represents her experiences in the marketplace as an autistic person. Here is a wee preview of it for the moment!1
