This week is officially <drumroll> National Afternoon Tea Week.. but you already knew that! So today, join me in a veritable soiree of tea, scones and jam.

With amazing foresight, @Katharine_Scope posted a thread yesterday asking who you would invite to afternoon tea and what your added cake/snack/drink would be if you could add one thing to the menu.
And, I'll freely admit the thought of afternoon tea hasn't loomed far out of my head ever since. With that said, get together your best fine bone china and tea as we have an afternoon of all things quintessentially English.
Now, what sandwiches shall we start off with? And should we cut the crusts off?

Has to be egg mayo and cress with crusts off as a starting point0
-
Tuna mayo and cucumber on wholemeal bread for me with crusts off too. Plus, tea - not too milky, half a teaspoon of sugar. Are you a big tea drinker or do you prefer coffee?0
-
I’d like thick ham sandwiches please with just a smidgen of mutard on wholemeal bread. And one coffee with two brown sugars. I’ve brought my own teaspoon ?
thank you.
oh, I forgot cake!0 -
Prawn, mayo & lettuce in wholemeal bread, cut into triangles, please. Coffee preferably.

@leeCal There's a cake shop over the road <points to conveniently placed virtual patisserie

Ooh nice choice, ham and mustard. I go through phases with mustard. Sometimes the colour puts me off! ha. Has anyone ever been out for afternoon tea? If so, where did you go and was it nice?0 -
How about some posh bread lol we can't forget good old potted meat as well
I will have tea with mine0 -
I'm intrigued to know what posh bread is @janer19670
-
Never knew there were so many!0
-
I love a bit of posh bread. But - can anything beat tiger bread with lashings of butter spread on it?0
-
Of course @Cher_Scope
Home baked bread still warm is the best the loaf doesn't last long0 -
So I didn’t know what to get and they had these fairy cakes ? made with fresh cream etc. So I bought those, hope their okay. Sixteen altogether, that should be enough for a while anyway.0
-
Aye you have a point @janer1967 My mum used to bake bread and there was nowt better than having it still warm from the oven with butter on. Oooft, I'm getting hungry just thinking about it.
Opinions on sandwiches cut into fingers - do we think it's unnecessary or quaint?0 -
Cut into fingers?! No thanks, just cut mine in half please.0
-
I don't mind fingers easier to eat0
-
Definitely triangles with the crusts cut off.....I made countless sandwiches when I worked in Pumphreys Coffee shop (a Saturday job many moons ago).

Making a batch of scones, got the jam just need to buy the clotted cream1
-
@chiarieds Ah yes, I don't know why but sandwiches cut into triangles always taste nicer than rectangles to me!
@vikingqueen Save me one!
Okay, sandwiches out the way. What cake are we all going for? I've been craving coffee flavoured swiss roll lately but that seems too demure for this occasion. I think I'll go for a slice of classic victoria sponge.0 -
Going to whip up some cakes to contribute please let me know your preference
Lemon drizzle
Strawberry Victoria sponge
Coffee and walnut
Choc fudge
Carrot cake
Red velvet
Fruit cake
Or any of your favourite i have missed0 -
@Cher_Scope lol we must both have been thinking it was cake time0
