Applied to start PIP claim and they require original passport sent to them

Hi. My dad is currently on DLA and wants to be reassessed so we’re applying for PIP. I called and started the process a week ago and they’ve sent a letter today, dated 24th August. The letter says they require more information before they can progress and would like us to send his passport via mail. Unfortunately I’m not sure where it currently is and I’m unsure what to do now. The letter states “ If you do not provide the information within 1 month of the date of this letter, your claim may be disallowed.”

If we’re unable to find it, can we apply for an extension while we look for it/apply for a new passport? The wait times on this are very long at the moment so it could be longer than the 24 days we have at the moment. Also, how likely is it the claim will be disallowed when we haven’t really made a claim at all? We’ve only called them and haven’t completed any forms. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

What would happen if you didn't have passport?

Is there any other option of document to provide ?

Not heard of this request before

Thanks for the replies. I’m not sure why they want his passport at all, especially if it’s not routine. He’s not native to this country but has been a British national for years and has had a British passport for years as well. Perhaps we can call them and ask why they require it? Happy to hear the deadline can be extended on request.

If this isn’t routine, how likely is it they’ll refuse his claim if they don’t receive it?

No, there was no other option of a document to provide at all.

He’s a British National and has been for a long time. He’s currently on State Pension and has been on DLA since 2006. His immigration status shouldn’t be in question at all, but okay, we can send it in if needed. The problem is, I’m not sure where his passport is and I don’t want his claim to be rejected because we couldn’t get the passport to them in time.

You need to ring them. You can also ask if there is some other form of acceptable ID. A British Citizen is under no obligation to hold a passport.

If you don’t want to put in the post you may be able to take documents to the JobCentre to be verified.

That’s great, thanks everyone. I’ll ring them and see what they say. Hopefully they can give us a little more time to find his passport or apply for a new one and send that. Unfortunately I don’t think he has another form of ID as his drivers license expired when he had a stroke and became disabled and I don’t think they’ll accept his national insurance card as ID!

Mikehugescq your talking like I’ve said it maliciously I’m just saying IMO I find it weird because I’ve never heard of it happen before she’s not exactly going to single out my comment and do what it say is she ? Your a bit OTT I was actually saying what I personally would do not what she “should” do you need to relax

Hi @Snow92 - if you have problems with a reply, then you should click on the 'Flag' button below the text box on that reply, & then on 'Report.' The Scope team will then look at your concerns, & be happy for you to email them for any clarification.
Having read through this thread, I personally can't see why you would think Mike thought you'd commented maliciously; I'm sure that's far from the case, nor is he OTT, simply stating facts, which had already been given. For the benefit of, not only the original poster, but those who may later read this, or any other post, then if inaccurate info is inadvertently given, it is corrected for the benefit of all. I personally have had a couple of my comments corrected, in a similar way to here. I don't take offence, but take it as an opportunity to learn more.

I didn’t take it to offence I wasn’t advising the poster to do anything if you read it I said call them and tell them you misplaced it which is what she was going to do anyway I was then saying I thought it to be weird because I’ve never heard of it before I can understand if people read my comment wrongly and if you feel it would mislead people then remove it problem solved I was only saying what I would personally do

I must have mis-read your post, as I thought it said, 'I wouldn't send it....' However, it's fine if a comment has already been corrected, so no worries. :)

Okay…so just to provide an update: I called and asked for an extension to find the passport or apply for a new one. They easily agreed to that and set the deadline to an extra month which is great. I also asked them to send a letter with the new deadline and that should arrive soon. Thanks for all the help!
