Hello @SueHeath how are you this Sunday afternoon? Would you like to tell us a bit about yourself, and why you joined the community today?
If you'd like to browse all the topics for discussion you can do so in our categories page. A good place to start is also the Coffee Lounge, where we have casual chat, fun and games to join in with, if you'd like.
If you do need a hand with anything on the forum, please just ask, and I look forward to seeing you around

Hi all
Introduction on my health
Like many of you i have always suffered with my back. I was diagnosed with progressive degenerative curviture of the spine in my early 30's, i am now 64. This was okay as a lot of my Aunts and my mom had the same.
I just got on with my life, worked full time and just coped and carried on taking the tablets on bad days. As time went on i started having problems with my sciatic nerves and was told that this was due to compression from a few of my discs and it would get worse, I just carried on with my life. Approx 2 years ago i started having totally different pain, numbness, no feeling in many of my toes so on the phone again to docs, beer in mind this is the covid time so delays with every thing. I was sent for xrays and within a week received text saying i was being refered straight back to the hospital to see consultant. Due to covid i had to wait a year for this appointment, was sent for mri scan the result was a bit of a shook to me its not my disc, a bone has moved on top of another bone and thats when they told me this was spinal stenosis. Consultant said its gone to far now and the only thing they can do is operate, he is communicating with the surgeon. I dont know if i want the opp i'm frightened. With my back in my life i have always just got on with things, but this is something else. I am on long term sick at the mo, i'm lucky i get 6 months full pay and 6 months half pay (which i am just going into now). My sister in law surgested i try a group like this so here i am ha ha.
Sorry if this is long winded but this is me at the moment and would really like to talk to someone thats gone thro the same thing. xx0 -

Sue, it appears that you have been off work for just over 6 months. If so, and your 28 week entitlement to SSP has ended, you are eligible to claim new style ESA if you have a complete NI record for 2019-20 and 2020-21. Your occupational sick will be ignored. To apply you will need a Fit Note and form SSP1 (which confirms the date SSP ends/ended) from your employer. You can backdate the ESA to the day after the SSP entitlement ended.
