Not while you are working 20 hours/week.

Your employer must pay you SSP for 28 weeks if you're eligible before claiming ESA. https://www.gov.uk/statutory-sick-pay/eligibility
You can use a benefits calculator to check entitlement to Universal Credit as well. If you live with a partner you claim as a couple and entitlement will be based on both your circumstances.
If you have savings of more than £16,000 you're excluded from claiming.
You mention a terminal illness if the diagnosis is less than 6 months then you can claim PIP which is a disability benefit but you'll need the DS1500 form to be able to claim this way. https://www.gov.uk/pip/claiming-pip-if-youre-terminally-ill
5 days ago you asked about claiming New style ESA for your son, just curious whether this question was for yourself or your son. See thread here. https://forum.scope.org.uk/discussion/88681/can-i-claim-new-style-esa-for-my-son#latest

You should claim PIP as a Special Rules claim. Your claim will be processed within two or three weeks and you will get weekly payments. Send a copy of the DS1500 and keep the original.

Depending on your financial circumstances you can claim Universal Credit and receive the LCWRA element included in your award from the start.

Unless you're self employed then your employer must pay you SSP first.
You can look at claiming PIP by using the DS1500 route, see link above.

If you intend to give up work you can claim new style ESA under Special Rules and you will be placed in the Support Group from the start of the claim. If you will be claiming UC there is no financial  gain claiming ESA as well as the ESA is deducted from the ESA.

If you have no other household income you will be better off receiving SSP from your employer and claiming UC than if you give up work.
