Hi guys, I am new to this forum and I hope you're all okay!
Just to give you some info on why I joined.
To begin, I am a third year student at UWE creating a short film for my final project. This short film is for ‘Shelter’ a charity that really do help the homeless in so many ways. In focus, this film will be exposing how marginalised groups are discriminated against the right for safe housing, in particular I am concentrating on a person who is blind on a wheelchair. Therefore, it would be really useful to gather any first hand conversations or conversations with someone who knows how close it is to becoming homeless or unsafe in society through any disability.
I really hope you understand what the project is for, I am in no way trying to glamourise anything, I just want to gather personal experiences to merge into my film to make it much more realistic rather than coming off secondary research from the internet. If you could forward this on to anybody you know it would really help, please direct them with this email or preferably my contact number
Kindest regards,
Sam

Not sure about sharing our full experience, but I have no doubt that if we were not a middle class family with resources, my daughter would have died in a gutter some years ago, because the system, including housing, is too difficult for her to access without our help.
Our local authority had no idea how many ground floor or wheelchair adapted properties were available in county - they said everything was done by individual housing associations. Private rents, even if suitable, are too expensive. At that time my daughter was less disabled than she is now, so she moved to a cheaper area where she had some friends. As her condition deteriorated, she began to be unable to manage the stairs.
She now lives in a bungalow, but the kitchen and bathroom need to be wheelchair adapted. We have been 18 months applying for the DFG grant, and so far we have got nothing from this process except frayed nerves and architect's bills. The amount of adaptations that she needs costs more than the grant, but they are insisting that everything the OT thinks she should have must be done at the same time. This means that we as a family are expected to put in some £30K - so what happens when a disabled person hasn't got the resources to do that (which my daughter hasn't, it's just that we have) I don't know. It's not as if there was anywhere suitable for her to move to.
We also know of one young woman, with good qualifications but confined to a wheelchair and needing an attendant who has been unable to work because she cannot find accommodation anywhere where she can find work. (Her family live in a country village.) Another friend was very sadly a victim of domestic violence in lockdown, and was told sorry, no refuges have any wheelchair adapted rooms. Luckily she was able to go and live with a relative for a while, but that relative's home was not adapted, with all the difficulties for both of them that that implies.
Finally, there is actually or in process of being built, a great deal of housing suitable for many disabled people (not my daughter, but she has very complex needs), except that this housing is all reserved for the over 55s.
I hope this little rant is useful to you - maybe giving you some pointers for your film?0 -
Hi Jen, that has really given me pause for thought, this is great for some pointers for my film - would it be possible to see if the young women could speak about her experiences, maybe if you coud message the for me? all the best,
sam
