Misophonia

Hi

Hope you are all well ?

Has anyone ever heard of Misophonia? Apparently it's a phobia of noises that irritate you, such as hearing people eating, drinking, breathing,  talking too much  etc.

Apparently it seems that I have it. That joins my arachnophobia & my fear of seagulls & pigeons (don't know what that is called, but I will find out).

I have had this for years,but didn't know that it's a phobia!

You learn something new every day !

I didn't know it was a phobia either @MadCow1, but those noises do irritate me sometimes!

Apparently Ornithophobia is a fear of birds.

How do you find managing your phobias, if you don't mind me asking?

    Hi,
When the noises irritate me,when they get too much,I have to go into another room by myself where there is no noise at all, until the moment passes &  I feel calm again.

It's good that you have a way of coping with it, so that you can help yourself in the moments where it does get a bit much.

I'm also glad you've found a strategy that works for you @MadCow1 :)

I know some people who like to use little earplugs to help block out unwanted noises too.

Yes, phobia names are unique aren't they, a lot of them come from Ancient Greek or Latin @Biblioklept

I get severely depressed amd self critical when i get triggered by my girlfriends vocal sounds  - it happens alot of the time but not all the time - i am happy and love her very much - and especially can honour that when i am not being triggered - Its not her fault of course - but i so wish i could change my extreme reactions  to the way she speaks sometimes - Does anyone else have experience of this ?

I have Misophonia! I cannot bear to hear people eating crisps! Fear of birds is orithophobia. Fear of bricks, for which I also suffer is touvlophobia. Fear of windmills, for which I also suffer, is anemomenophobia. Fear of dirty underwear (and I am a martyr to this fear), is esorouchaphobia or snickophobia. Phobias can go by different names, but there is a phobia for absolutely everything! It is called pantophobia!

Anyway, I love you all to death: Thanatophobia!!! I've got to get a life, koinophobia! I really will have to get over my chronophobia though. Until then, I will have to find something else to be phobic about, like teapotphobia! Yes, it is true. Teapotphobia is an excessive fear of teapots! Anyway, I have to go to sleep soon, but I am always a bit nervous about going to sleep: Somniphobia.

Apart from all of the above, I am quite sort of normal and sort of live in fear of not being normal: Atelophobia!

Hi @MadCow1, sorry to hear that you are suffering from Misophonia.

    I didn’t know it was a phobia.

I am pleased that Ear plugs are of benefit to you. 😊

I suffer from this and have done quite severely for some years now although I first remember experiencing a strong hatred of my father crunching biscuits around the age of 12 even though he always eats with his mouth closed.

It then seemed to go away

It then came back in around 2017. Now it’s dreadful. I can’t bear hearing anybody making any noise when they are eating. Listening to someone eat an apple kills me. Chewing gum (even though I did this as a teenager 😂)

I can’t listen to cutlery scraping on a plate, especially some scraping every last bit of porridge, ice cream or custard etc out of a bowl. It cuts me like a knife. To save exploding I have to put plugs in my ears or if possible leave the room.

I can’t cope with a ticking clock, someone’s phone alarm going off repeatedly.

I am also affected by visual repetitive movements, ie someone rubbing their feet together, picking at their fingernails,
sitting and rocking or bouncing legs about etc.

It could be anything that might trigger the tensing of my body, stabbing feeling in the stomach and wanting to explode.
