I have been a nurse the whole of my life, 47years service.
I did the Disability Analyst Nurse training under Medacs 2013 and it has not changed but all of the training agencies are inadequate, there is no specialist training and this is where the problem starts, it is basic and too broad to be able to understand a specialised area of disability
Now being on the other side and riddled with arthritis I am able to comment on both sides of the fence.
The criteria for being a assessment nurse currently is 1-2 years experience from a medical background somewhere. The trainers are a problem if this poor criteria is expected to understand a particular condition, if assessors do not understand anatomy. physiology and functionality of a particular malfunctioning part of the body then their report is flawed
My understanding is that a non medical person makes the final decision on a assessors report for DWP ( this is disgraceful )The next problem is the assessment Form
Applying for PIP or Attendance Allowance the form is the same
Unfortunately the questionaire is designed for terminally ill patients because a lot of the questions are repetitive and DWP assessors focus on one element only, day and night time care, these terminally ill patients should receive the allowance from the day that they are diagnosed I am aware that now the claim period is 1 year and not 6 months.
This one and only element of day and night time care is the only reason used to refuse a claimant who has a disabling condition.
All agencies offering help like Citizens Advice / Age UK / Disability UK for example all state the same thing as does the Governments DWP department YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE RECEIVING CARE TO QUALIFY, this allowance can be used for other help as in aids or physical help at home to use it for anything that makes life easier with your disability with the view to remaining independent, to keep yourself safe, private and dignified
Musculoskeletal Conditions speak for themselves because they affect power and strength so automatically ones daily activities are affected, there is no cure and one has to learn to live with chronic pain, these conditions affect life, not just daily activities
The real culprits are:
The Government ( another policy designed to fail )
DWP - Government Department and the Training Agencies

To continue anyone who feels that they qualify and fulfill the criteria I suggest that they request a hard copy of the claim form and just put N/A to any question that does not fit their circumstances because this is not a form that fits all, the assessors role I feel is more to do with making the journey difficult

That's quite misleading. PIP has nothing to do with day or night time needs. DLA was more about day and night time needs but DLA no longer exists for those aged between 16 and state pension.

I can't see either of those forms being aimed mostly towards terminally ill claimants. Lots of people claim disability benefits who are not terminally ill, myself and my daughter included and we are definitely not terminally ill.

Everyone has their own view be it PIP or A/A my research shows that the criteria is very much similar,
I guess it depends how you interpret terminal, terminal does not only mean end of life
If you are living with a condition for the remainder of your life then my view is that it is terminal, you do not have to die to have a terminal condition

They are both completely different benefits with different criteria. AA also doesn't have the mobility part. AA is about night and day time needs. PIP is nothing to do with night or day time needs. It's about the help you need against the 12 PIP activities.

I disagree. I have a life long condition but i wouldn't call it a terminal illness. Terminal for benefits purposes is less than 6 months.
