New homes will be more accessible for older and disabled people as the government today confirms plans to raise the accessibility standard.

Just raising standards on paper will not be enough they need to be rigorously enforced and practically workable as well.   When the LA moved me into my current property I was being moved into a "wheelchair accessible" property (as the one I lived in could not be adapted due to asbestos in the floors) there were 3 steps to the front door they refused to build the ramp until after I had moved in and then it took them a year so I had to be helped or carried in and outside and then my wheelchair carried in and out for me.  I have never been able to use my wheelchair inside as the rooms are not big enough.

About 5 months ago one of my neighbours died leaving a bungalow that is properly wheelchair accessible I asked if I could move into that and then the LA could advertise my property to someone who needed level access but not a wheelchair they said no I would have to reapply and be put at the back of the waiting list as as far as they are concerned I am in an adequate property now - the person they moved into the bungalow has no mobility issues or mobility equipment, their disability is not physical - now I DO NOT begrudge them a home but they would have been just as suited to the property I am currently in that is not fit for my needs.

I live in my own 2 storey /3 bed semi house and am thinking of moving to another area, but need a bungalow - my mobility is now poor and getting worse
However - bungalows are in such short supply that this appears tp be impossible so I am stuck
If I didn't own my own house and wasnt financially independant - things would be different - the council would HAVE to find me suitable accomodation
