I don`t know if it`s age or something a bit more sinister

Hi,
To put a bit of context around my discussion title........ I`m a touch typist and I like to think I have a good grasp of punctuation and grammar to compliment my typing. I have no problem reading, but I now only read forums / fora (depending on whether you prefer the Latin version or Anglicised version for the plural of forum) like Scope and Benefits & Work or online newspapers. I don`t enjoy reading books anymore because I have spent so much of my time studying over the years, either for work or for pleasure (Open University).
Over the last couple of years my mind has been playing tricks with me in the following way:
I have to read some articles twice because what I`ve read didn`t make sense (I can`t remember exact instances, so I`ve put these together to give an idea) e.g.:
"She bought a pair of toast and put them with the rest of her clothes" - I read "toast" instead of "tights".
When I`m typing, I`m watching the screen and the words appear as I type. When I go to review it before saving / sending, there are words missing. For example and to use a common typing line:
I`ll type "the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" (typists will know that covers every letter of the alphabet).
But what I actually typed when reviewing it is:
"The brown fox jumps over the dog"
I`m not overly concerned at the moment, I`m more interested to see if it`s a common thing as a person gets older.
Andy

Hi @Cartini, the same thing has been happening to me recently. I also miss out the initial letters of words for some reason, I never used to do that before. Personally, I've put it down to constant, severe pain affecting my memory.
I know you say it could be age-related but with me I believe it's more the pain affecting my memory and concentration, though I know that some people might put it down to my age as well (I'm 63 years young...). Certain supplements have helped me with my memory before, so I need to start taking them again.

Evening @Cartini
Thank you for creating this thread and telling us about what you are experiencing. I hope you are staying safe and well in the heat. Sorry to hear of what you are going through, it isn't something I have experienced myself.
I just wanted to pop a comment on here to say that if you do get concerned about what you are going through, it might be worth just checking in with a doctor to try and ease any worries you have about it.
Take care0 -
@Cartini Said:I’ve been doing that recently myself, I’m a bit older than you. I’ve pit it down to scan reading because I’m bored with the contents. I also find that sometimes the letter I’ve typed hasn’t registered then of course auto correct kicks in and lo and behold I’ve written something I never meant to say!I have to read some articles twice because what I`ve read didn`t make sense (I can`t remember exact instances, so I`ve put these together to give an idea) e.g.:"She bought a pair of toast and put them with the rest of her clothes" - I read "toast" instead of "tights".
Auto correct can be such a pain sometimes. I once wrote a job application addressed to Dear Lizard, instead of Liz. She wasn’t impressed.1 -
‘I’ve pit it down to scan reading ’ see what I mean! 🤣2

Totally understand how it feels though. On a lesser scale, I frequently accidentally call my partner custard, because using voice typing sometimes comes up with that when I say her name 1 -
Hi @Oxonlady, now that`s a very good point, thank you. It`s one that I haven`t considered before; I`ll have to try and take note of how my spine is when I misread.Oxonlady said:Hi @Cartini, the same thing has been happening to me recently. I think it can happen when you’re a little tired, I know it does to me.0

Evening @Ross_scope, I`m safe and well thank you. I`m not concerned over it, I put it down to getting old (61 soon), but Oxonlady has put forward a very good reason for it.

Thank you, that`s a good point. Despite sleeping well (I`m on 30mg of Amitriptyline a night for pain, but they are also knocking me out), I`m always tired. I work in I.T. where I have to do some deep thinking to understand problems with the storage or servers, so the two combined could be playing tricks with my mind.

Hi @Cartini,
I do a lot of typos on certain words when I’m tired, especially the ones that I often use at work.
I understand where you’re coming from with the tiredness, I suffer loads with severe lethargy, it’s difficult to describe and many don’t understand how debilitating it can be.0 -
Hi @karen7788, you are spot on there, tiredness can be completely debilitating. I`ve lost count of the number of times I`ve sat at work and I was so tired it felt like my head was being squeezed.Karen7788 said:Hi @Cartini,

I do this quite often...and I'm half your age.

In my case I think it's probably down to 'stress'. My short term memory is terrible with most tasks...which is difficult with OCD as it just adds more doubt as whether I have or haven't done something.
I can even re-read something 3 or 4 times...but then spot the mistake once I've printed it off or posted online. Fortunately most forums have an edit button.
I printed off a letter yesterday, having read it several times, and only noticed once printed that I hadn't ended it with 'Kind regards', or even my own name!!

How nice to meet another touch typist. There doesn't seem to be that many of us about these days. I suppose we are all getting older and not many are taught to touch type these days.
I don't really get the mistakes typing but I do have difficulty retaining what I have read. I read for pleasure, mainly novels and have always done so since being very small.
I'm 68 now and for the last few years find that I have to re-read parts because I can't remember the plot or important characters. When I was younger I never had this problem.
I think scan reading makes it worse too. I try to train myself to say in my head every single word I am reading and that seems to make it stick better. It's slower but actually more enjoyable because you create the scene the author is trying to tell you much better.0 -

We`re a dying breed. The generation of today only use 2 fingers to tap on the unSmartphones whilst they are on anti-social media.
