Hi I'm disabled on esa and pip and husband receives Carer's allowance. My question is his 33 year old son has come back to live with us and he's working but doesn't like to pay any bills of his own. My question is will him moving back home affect my benefits even though he doesn't put a penny into the house and please don't say we'll make him do it because he's my stepson and I'm afraid his dad wouldn't agree with me. I'm so scared of getting into trouble I just don't know where to turn. T.I.A

It won’t affect your ESA or PIP. If you’re claiming help with any rent through housing benefit then because you’re claiming at least daily living PIP there’s no non dependent deductions.
Cant advise about council tax because all local Authorities have their own rules. You will need to contact your Local Authority and report the changes.

Looking at it in a different way. I paid the deposit and the first month's rent on a two-bed rented home for them when they were 24 as they wanted to be independent.
We then sold our 4 bed home and bought a new two-bed home. (a) so as to make it easier to keep and (b) so that our girls didn't have the option of moving back in with us.
It certainly made them grow up and take responsibility for themselves.

Welcome to the community @dawny2022 :) How are you doing today?

I can see that poppy123456 has already been able to give you some advice on this, which I hope has been helpful!

I can imagine that it'd be a worrying situation. It also sounds as though you're not completely comfortable with your stepson not contributing towards the bills. Is that right?

If so, could you speak to your husband about it? Even if he doesn't agree with you, it might help to talk it out and share your concerns, and to gain a greater understanding of where he's coming from.

Bit harsh @racyguy, my children left home 15ish years ago and have children of their own. Both of them are settled  and have good lives, but they still have a door key and there is always a bed made up 'just in case'. I would never 'sell up' so they couldn't come back

I don`t think what racyguy said was harsh; we`re all different.  You also don`t know why he and his other half don`t want their kids back home; life isn`t black and white.

Thank you for the advice I'm going to ring the benefits in the morning and explain the situation.

If you’re planning on ringing ESA and PIP then please be aware that you will be ringing a call centre who have very little benefits knowledge.
Your son moving in will not affect either of those benefits.
