Paying debts while on benefits

Hi

I’m curious. Should I be paying my loan still if I’m in receipt of benefits?

I keep thinking I should probably not be paying it but I’m wondering if this is something I should do.

Being on benefits doesn't discount you fron paying debts you may be able to arrange a repayment plan paying a reduced amount but they still expect some payment

It's important you discuss with them your ability to pay and not just ignore them

What makes you think you shouldn't be paying your debts? We all have to pay our bills, regardless of the fact some maybe claiming benefits. You just can't ignore the debt and hope it will go away.

I’m just thinking should I be paying big debts like £200 loan whilst on benefits. That money should be for food etc.

Claiming benefits doesn't mean you shouldn't continue to pay your bills, including loans which are debt. If you don't pay your debts then you'll be receiving letters demanding payments and your credit history will be affected negatively. Therefore yes you need to continue to pay them.
If you can't afford to pay the amount they are asking then you need to contact them and speak to them. Or contact step change for advice.

My partner and friend usually help me with my debt and paying bills but we were unsure if we could maybe stop paying and choose a different option.

No, never stop paying, always speak to the company you owe the debt to before doing anything else.
