GCSE query?

Hi, i am hoping for some advice and guidance. My son is 14 and has cerebral palsy he is haemeplegic. He has elected to PE for GCSE he mainstream schools but is impaired. As part of his GCSE he has to do some practical sports (so far no issue).
He needs to get certain times and diatances to get marks for practical. He is fit and relatively capable yet the times and distances from the exam board give no consideration to those with disability. We have asked the board for some considerations and their response is that they dont give consideration and said we should suggest what they should do.This is clearly unfair.
My question is has anyone in the community had this experience as the student or parent ?
If so what did you do and what advice can you offer?
Thanks in advance for any help.

@pd76 welcome to the community.
I am going to tag @Richard_Scope as he may have some good advice.
While the board response is disappointing I also find it encouraging, if they are genuinely interested in hearing from you and the school. After all you both know your child better than the board and at least they are looking for input on how to possibly support him.
Hopefully Richard and some of our members will be able to give you better advice.2 -
Hi @pd76
Good to meet you and thanks for posting.
I would suggest a meeting with the teachers delivering the GCSE PE course to discuss their views on what they would consider a reasonable adjustment for the course having taught your son and having awareness of his physical capabilities. Alongside your input, a report should be prepared by the school making reference to the syllabus of the course and using your son's EHCP to make recommendations to the exam board.0 -
Thanks Richard. We have sat down with school and responded to the board with suggestions and considerations. We will see what they comeback with. I find it strange that no one seems to have come up against this as an issue before (GCSEs are not new). I also believe if they dont make provision for disabilities they are in breach of the 2010 Equality Act. Although i hope they are willing to engage as I dont want to go down this route other than as a last resort. Thanks again.0
