1-year PIP extensions & Motability

I am currently in a PIP extension for 6 months. I currently have a 3 year old Motability car on a lease which has been extended past 3 years due to me not having the 12 months left on my PIP award required to choose a new car.

I have read that they are now giving out 1-year PIP extensions for people who are currently awaiting a decision on a review. They give these out 1 month early.

This means if I get an extension I will have 13 months of PIP.

Motability tell customers to choose a new car if they have over 12 months PIP remaining.

Does this still apply if the PIP award is due to an extension?

In other words, will I have to choose a new car if I get a 1-year extension? Or will I be able to extend my current car?

I would prefer to extend my current car as I don’t want to pay a large advance payment to potentially only have the car for 12 months, possibly even less if I get a decision earlier and lose my allowance.

Thank you.

    As far as I know, based on my own experience, you're currently able to extend a 3 year lease of a motability car up to a 5 year lease, i.e. extend it by 2 years at most.

    Is this something you've been in touch with Motability about yet @66Mustang? :)

    @Alex_Scope

    Thanks for the response.

    I can't extend it to 5 years on the "low mileage" terms, as I've done too many miles. I can only extend if I don't have 12 months PIP left.

    I'm just wondering whether the 12 month PIP extension counts as a proper PIP award by Motability, as if so I'd have to order a new car if I was given one of these PIP extensions.

    Thanks :)

    You can just extend your current lease by speaking to motability. There are very long waiting times for new cars anyway, so you may not have your new one anytime soon if you did place an order.

    Ah thanks for explaining @66Mustang I'd forgotten about the low mileage thing, do you think you'd be able to speak to them about extending your lease?
