DISABLED REGISTRATION
Hi all.
I keep hearing about registered disabled on the radio.
Many callers have said this.
Can anyone shed light on this please
Thank you

It's an old fashioned phrase. There is no national or local register of disabled people.
I guess some people class themselves as "registered disabled" through getting various benefits etc.

I was given a yellow disabled card when I was registered disabled in Hampshire a few years a go, and in my new county I have a white card.
The disabled registers I joined are voluntary, I just applied online on the councils website.

I think my local authority might have a register for those with severe sight impairments, that's about it here.

I've used my registered disabled cards for discounts to places before I applied for the disabled blue card.
They do come in handy.

I don't think there's ever been an official register of disabled people, but some councils have them because it gives them an idea of how many disabled people live in the area. There were talks about stopping it in Surrey a few years a go because not many people were applying to join it.

Yes Hampshire still has a yellow card they give you for free when you register as disabled with them.

The old labour exchanges/Dole office/job centre used to have a disabled register, it was a green card in the 80's

I remember that now, some of my older friends in my old job in the MOD had green cards to show that they couldn't do certain jobs. I forgot all about that.

When I applied at Hampshire council for my yellow card their computer made a mistake and sent me 5 different ones with different numbers on, they just told me to use the last one and cut the rest up !!
