Hiya I am trying to find out if my Mum has to pay council Tax or can she get a reduction please. Her council tax has gone up to £240 month can she get any help with this please.

My Mum has lung Cancer and COPD her lung cancer has returned after a year of having it removed and they told us it is not curable.

My brother her youngest son lives with her and he works full time and he pays half of his share of council tax if I contact the council will they say my brother has to pay all of the council tax or will she get her share reduced. She is in receipt of Attendance Allowance and pension credit also state pension.

I am hoping she will get help do you know if there is a way of checking please.

Ta Jo x

I would suggest that your mum makes a claim for Council Tax Reduction which you can do via her local authority website.

If she is the owner of the property or the sole tenant then she will always be liable and your brother just listed as an occupant.

As each area has different rules for CTR, it is very hard to advise on individual cases from here.

Hi @Jo69, welcome to the community!

As others have said, unfortunately Council Tax Reduction eligibility varies a lot between local authorities, so it is really difficult to say what your mum would be entitled to. The best thing to do may be to contact the local authority for more details, or just apply and see whether she is accepted.

I hope you can get some more clarification soon.
