Resources and tips for those living with chronic pain
Alongside advice from medical professionals, trustworthy online resources can be beneficial in learning new information and coping techniques around managing chronic pain.
With special thanks to @chiarieds, this is a ‘mega-thread sticky’ of suggestions for those impacted, both physically and emotionally, by chronic pain in everyday life.
Please feel free to share your own tips, thoughts, and anecdotes in the comments section below, and tell us what helps you?
From professional organisations:
- NHS – Ways to manage chronic pain.
- The Physiotherapy Pain Association – ‘Online resources for people living with pain’.
- Torbay and South Devon NHS Trust – 'Creating skills for the future: Deep breathing exercise'
- Pain Concern charity – Support leaflets.
For support with mental health
- Breathing Space (Scotland) for anyone over the age of 16, feeling low, anxious or depressed.
- The Samaritans to speak with someone, without judgement, any time or day of the week. Options to email jo@samaritans.org or call 116123.
- NHS Inform – Chronic pain self help guide that uses Cognitive Behavioural Therapy to help you live with symptoms more easily.
- NHS iCope – Extensive source of resources aimed at those with persistent pain impacting upon mental health.
- Scope – Managing mental health advice page lists changes to look out for and where to access support with mental health.
Holistic techniques
And finally, @chiarieds recommends the ‘Ten Footsteps’ approach, explaining:
With people often having to wait months to be seen in a Pain clinic, or to get on a Pain Management Programme, the ‘Ten Footsteps’ approach is a good way for a person to start to learn how they may be able to manage their own chronic/persistent pain.
Your thoughts and experiences
We'd love to hear your words in response to any of the above. And if you want to start a thread dedicated to your own story, please feel free to start a thread in our chronic pain category.Comments

I'd like to give a nudge about the Live Well with Pain website who started the 'Ten Footsteps' approach mentioned above which is about self help management for those living with chronic pain.
Recent news is that Live Well With Pain have held their first National Conference:
They've also got a Chronic Pain Cookbook which is free to download or can be seen here:

I hope you find it useful @tealhoneydew16 - I have osteoarthrosis due to having the hypermobile type of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (hEDS). Studies have shown that the pain those of us with hEDS suffer is very similar to that of fibromyalgia sufferers.

Ive got osteoarthritis in the spine, fibromyalgia & have multiple prolapsed discs too. Been suffering since i was 16 with my spine (over 30 years) & past 6 years with fibro (probably longer diagnosed in 2019)
Painkillers have stopped working get no relief just side effects. Dr offered new medication but cant swallow tablets so non-starter.
I use the skills i got from pain management course (mainly breathing techniques which are similair to asthma techniques) or if it gets to much go to sleep & reset.

I agree @stressed76 - I'm a long-retired physio & used to teach 'diaphragmatic' breathing to those with back pain, maternity classes etc. I've long found that learning how to breathe properly helps reduce pain & stress, & it's my mainstay:
Pain medication helps with the neurological pain I also have, but doesn't do a thing for my hEDS. I've studied 'chronic pain' for several years now, & it's often found a combination of things helps the most, so hope you may also find some of the resources above helpful, including what we eat.
