Getting a lodger

I live in an housing association flat and want to get a lodger in, i am aware that i need to get the landlords permission first but then after once its all approved will universal credit cut my housing element that helps me pay the rent if the lodger also gets the housing element?

I believe so. I think it works the same way as housing benefit did.

If that is the case then it is pretty much pointless getting a lodger,
I have seen this on another website and it states different

Looking through that post and the list of rules a commenter posted, I still think you'd lose money.
Seems you can have a lodger if they don't pay you, but if they pay you it's classed as money towards your housing.
Again, I could be wrong, but I don't see UC allowing anyone to have someone (a lodger) paying half your rent, and UC still paying you full rent.

Hi @firat94 this might be helpful to you. It covers a number of aspects as well as how it might impact your benefits (both UC and housing benefit) - Getting a lodger - Citizens Advice

UC doesn't work in the same way as Housing Benefit.
Rent paid to you by a lodger does not count as income on UC. So your payments don't change.
The situation will be slightly more difficult for the lodger if they are also on UC though.

So my housing element will stay the same?
What would the situation be for the other person claiming UC?

Yes, your housing would stay the same.
The lodgers would have to be calculated by UC to determine how much they deem a fair amount for the number of rooms that they use. It isn't as straightforward as the LHA shared rate, needs to be manually calculated.

What does UC take into account when calculating this?
Is it just the bedroom they use or will they take into account the lodger using the livingroom bathroom kitchen etc?

I don't know the exact calculation unfortunately. It's not a common circumstance.
