Advice Regarding a Message in Our Journal from Local JC About Next Steps To Work

Good morning everyone - I have been caring for my partner since 2019 and she was awarded LCWRA in Jan 2020. The lockdown happened and all the medical investigations were delayed etc. Her conditions worsened, eventually she was able to get diagnosed. A degenerative crippling disease in both hands & cognitive decline & was eventually awarded full PIP award in 2023.

Yesterday she received a message in her journal ( got a text message sent to my phone as she cant use the phone anymore) from the local JC asking if there was any help they could give towards getting her studying - upskilling - confidence classes - mental health etc - quite a long list. It did stress that there was no obligation to take up the offer and there was no risk to losing the  LCWRA if she did. It also said only "if she was ready to do so". It also said that if she was interested she could answer the message in the Journal if she was ready to take this step - something to that effect - and once again stressed that she was not obligated to do it.

I forgot to mention that she had a rather serious allergic reaction to a drug that was supposed to help reduce the effects if the disease in the hands but it made them worse as well as the problems and caused a range of new health issues. A dramatic loss of weight ( 10kgs) due to not being able to eat many foods.

All this was declared at the PIP interview in Dec 2023. We assumed that DWP share information and never mentioned all the detail in the journal - other than to say that she was awarded PIP. ( didn't say it was the maximum award either).

At first I was going to respond and explain that she is not probably going to be able to do this and is currently quite ill with a severe migraine and really weak from not being able to eat much and currently awaiting a variety of scans and hospital appointments.

But then I realised they said only respond if interested in doing all this so decided not to respond at all.

I also thought it would be good to ask advice from others to see if they have had the same emails and how they responded and if I should respond and update the ongoing issues she is dealing with.

My main concern is triggering another medical check ( Sorry forget what it is called officially) because she is so much worse, which would really probably be impossible to go to - I had assumed that DWP shared info but recently was told they dont and it would be a separate check…

So I am not sure what would be the best thing to do. Do I just go to them and submit the medical information - it is the same conditions but worse. The memory loss was happening but was at first thought to be menopausal symptoms/ stress / depression/ anxiety - which is still happening but now it has worsened and they think it is early onset Dementia ( Cognitive Decline ) She is 57 years old. Still waiting to see specialist treatment for this.

So going forward - what advice can any of you good people share? I would be worried to trigger a full medical review with the DWP right now - and would it if I said she was worse ? Does anyone know ?

And as they said to only respond if she wanted to participate - then is it safe to not answer? Will they keep sending these messages and will they become less friendly?

I am just not sure what to do as I dont want to jeopardize her health/wellbeing right now nor cause any loss of finance if a review went badly at this stage.

Bear in mind she is not very mobile either.

It would be great to get advice from @Kimi87, @Catherine21 @Albus_Scope

or anyone else who has dealt with this type of message on their journal.

Much thanks in advance

    Hi,

The Work Capability Assessment for UC is completely different to the PIP assessment, different questions, different criteria, etc. One can't be used for the other benefit so PIP & UC don't share those details.

As your partner is currently on LCWRA then you don't need to do anything at all. I wouldn't even respond to that journal message.

If they were on LCW then they would be expected to complete some sort work related activity at some point. And in that case I would recommend having another WCA to move them into the LCWRA group instead. But if you're sure they're in LCWRA already then they will not have any obligation to complete work related activity at all at any point.

Hi @OverlyAnxious - Thank you for taking the time to read my long email & for the fast response :)

Thank you for your advice too - which makes total sense - considering what you have explained so clearly.

And yes my partner is definitely in the LCWRA group - it is on the letter she received after the WCA.

I really appreciate how well you explained how it all works - the criteria being different for PIP & WCA for UC as well as the difference between LCW & LCWRA requirements. Lately it feels it has become so confusing to navigate - what with all the changes that were going to come - then not - the not knowing where we stand and what has changed felt mind boggling. I ended up being so confused - so thank you for explaining that so well.

Hope you are having a good day - bless you ☺️☺️
