My son will have to go into hospital soon for an extended stay and we wondered if anyone had recent first hand experience of the affect on benefits-universal credit, pip with motability premium and a council tax reduction?

He should report any hospital admissions to PIP as after 28 days the PIP award will be suspended. When discharged he will need to contact PIP again. If he can't do this you can do this for him. If you call PIP on someone' s behalf they will usually ask which hospital the person has been admitted to and sometimes which ward they are on. They will also ask if you know how long they are going to be in hospital for. I would also contact Motability again when someone is admitted and discharged. I wouldn't bother trying to report a planned admission in advance as things can change at the last minute and PIP will just you call back on the date of admission.

I would suggest that he puts a note on his Universal Credit journal when he is admitted and again when he is discharged. It shouldn't affect his UC payments. However if UC try to contact him but he is unable to respond whilst in hospital this will avoid any issues. I wouldn't have thought that he needs to tell the council re his CTR.

sorry to hear that your son is going to be staying in hospital out of my knowledge it doesn't effort PIP but I would still let them know just to be on the safe side

Just for anyone who's interested.I phoned up pip and carers allowance the day after he was admitted to hospital. They made a note and said to let them know when he comes out.I must admit I was very confused because evidently payments may continue but then might be reclaimed later which is exactly what I am trying to avoid .Just UC now!
