I have just received a letter from council tax saying they want to see my award of universal credit to keep receiving council tax support by 28th November to keep receiving support but my universal credit award does not generate until 2nd December, as I’m migrating over and received 100% support before the migration will I still be entitled to the 100% support on universal credit?

Let them know the date of your first statement, so they know why you can't provide it by the 28th.

Every area does council tax support differently, so we can't advise much on here.

I have seen a few examples where UC is treated differently to legacy benefits in some areas, resulting in reduced support, but most see the same award.

ok thanks for the advice, I can see why so many people are stressed out with the whole process, I just hope when I’m fully migrated it will just be left alone like I was before

    Hello All,

I was shocked this morning to get a letter from my City Council, about my Council Tax bill. As usual it didn’t explain things in detail, just the word “benefit” at the top & lower down stating that I need to pay £70 a month (cash) from the 1 St of October. The only other thing I noticed was the council tax benefit for April seemed to be the same discount, but from 12/5/25 this year, when my first UC payment came, I now had to pay. Yet they’re only sending this now, though they’re known as being an awful council in many ways, I’m on the tenant panel & lack of & poor communication comes up repeatedly.

I am getting just about the same amount as before, when it was just ESA Support Group, now it’s part New Style ESA & UC, I got full Council Tax Benefit? I panicked & called them, but because I was due to go to a medical appointment, I called Council Tax, waited over an hour to be answered, only to be told it was the benefit section I needed to speak to. I’ve felt unwell physically & mentally in recent weeks, so wasn’t thinking clearly. Has this happened to others?

If this is the case, that they can now cut my Council Tax Support by a lot, shows why most of us ESA Support Group were forced over to UC. As I moved into sheltered accommodation with this council in April 2023, I now pay a large service charge every month, of about £97 (includes communal heating). This will all make my costs even larger than previously.

Council Tax Reduction is decided on at a local level and each local authority has different rules for this.

Some areas do treat UC differently to legacy benefits and some people have seen an increase in the amount of CT they have to pay.

CTR is administered by local authorities, UC is DWP.

The change from legacy benefits to Universal Credit is not connected to or run by local authorities.
