What are your concerns about a potential Digital ID?
There's been some talk on the community regarding the governments potential plans to roll out a digital ID and this is something we're keen to get your feedback on.
As everything is a hypothetical right now, we won't be answering any questions, as no one really knows right now and there are no actual plans in place. But we'd love to get your feedback on this, as we have a voice and will be able to use it.
So, what concerns you about a potential digital ID scheme?

All I've seen so far is an inability for anybody to keep data safe (NHS/M & S/Coop/JLR etc etc). All we now need is data breaches/cyber attacks on banking/DWP etc, and we're doomed! I will not be signing up for Digital ID, whatever the consequences.
The National Security Strategy I read yesterday made for dire reading. If Digital ID is supposed to stop illegal immigration I'd love to know how, I don't believe it will for one moment.

Also, respectfully, the assumption that Digital ID is just like having a Tesco card or that the government have lots of data on us already so it's just the same (which I've seen and heard many people saying)… is very naive and missing the reality of this.
When there are also people who have lived in and come from very controlling regimes in other countries saying this is the basis of such regimes and we should be concerned, I think we should heed their warnings.

Right now, on the surface level it sounds okay BUT I have huge future concerns about the powers it can give them and how it disproportionately impacts disabled and lower income people and can and will be used as a means of control
I'm lso concerned about:
-Digital exclusion and what that means for those who can't due to disability, financial or other reasons use an app or digital ID
-Increased control and data gathering of government systems and how they could be used and applied
For example, you protest against them, they can remove your income, access to your banks and money, restrict your travel or anything they want
OR as we've already seen with benefits, they use it as justification to remove, lower, change systems based on whatever they decide to spin any data as
I'm not naive enough to think the digital world doesn't already contain everything about me, of course it does, the idea of our government having control over all of it in one place, to use as they please, I don't get why anyne would be happy with it.
They're not exactly trustworthy and have a history of misusing, mishandling, leaking or selling our data already

I am totally against it. It is an infringement of civil liberties! Agree with above concerns. The whole justification sounds like nothing more than a phoney excuse to me. For years now we have had to show passports or other photographs ID to rent anywhere or get a job, etc.
Also smart phones need regular security updates, which means they are only safely usable for a few years. Nobody helps or explains these security issues with the majority of users, before insisting they use these phones for absolutely everything!

Where did you read this @Catherine21? At the moment I can only see quotes where Keir Starmer has said that digital ID may be beneficial if moved out into other areas, but not that it is definitely happening.

He's definitely exploring options and hearing how India's system has been used @Catherine21 but I don't think anything has been confirmed about whether it will be used for benefits over here from what I could see. We'll keep an eye out for any further announcements ☺️

There saying benefits , hmrc, schools etc. This is insane. I'm going to get a old phone type. So many companies getting hacked. It's like a dystopian world we are living in under this tyrant.

Other than excessive government control, the obvious issue is data security. The systems are going to have an interface for the verification, they will be a prime target for attack. Only this week the company discord was using for data verification has been breached and data for 70000 people obtained.

I think digital ID will be another track and trace app fiasco wasting billions of tax payers money on a ridiculous idea that will hopefully be fazed out as the public do not want it, and it would have constant problems with data breaches, technical problems etc all resulting in detrimental consequences for individuals with no help or assistance whatsoever when it implodes their lives!
I would rather the government not waste more billions of tax payers money on a useless idea, being used for sinister purposes also it’s probably another scheme where some MP financially benefits from this! Cannot trust any government anymore especially when money is concerned! Or our freedom and rights are at risk! Also if implemented, what happens when people disagree with governments choices and want to protest? Are they stopped from accessing their own bank accounts, blocked from using their own money to buy food, will they force mandatory vaccinations on the public, put travel restrictions in place, the lists of things they could force on us is endless. Digital IDs is all about stealing more money from the poor to line the pockets of the rich, and removing our rights and freedoms.

so members of the public pay them monthly to pay there salary and then they crowdfund to finance the cases they wish to fight sounds good

Saying 13 year old have to have it
If you look at China which has it, it scary. Starmer cosying up to them. This has to stop.its not about immigration, if it was then why not migrants have it. Its about control

Hopefully the backlash would be so great that it would be ditched. Starmer seems to be Blairs puppet.

My main concerns about a potential Digital ID include privacy risks, data security breaches, misuse of personal information, and loss of control over who accesses my data.

I noticed last week Starmer (I nearly wrote Blair!) was very emphatically praising Trump re the middle east peace process. This is happening a lot. Trump wants the Nobel Peace Prize and people are cosying up to him about it. Seems to be a bully-boy thing nowadays. I get the impression Norway was targeted for financial consequences after they gave this prize to a Chinese freedom writer.

Spare martphone turned off in drawer maybe best solution if this really becomes mandatory. If so perhaps disable microphone and camera.

Look at everything else being done at the same time as this is being pushed, including the revised request for Apple to break encryption for them. Break privacy basically. Or even the recent Universal Credit Bill and the way that is being handled (terribly for us). Look at the Post Office Horizon scandal as extra food for thought.
It's a worrying plan all round.

I hadn't heard about it. Very glad it wasn't Trump!

This is actually a really good thread to add to info for my letter to my MP (for what little its worth writing to him, although he is in the opposition party,Con, right now)
For me, and given the ever expanding increase in cyber crime, I cannot see our government actually getting this right.. Of course someone, legal or otherwise will make massive profit from it.
96 % of the population have an mobile phone (Uswitch) that's 96% of the population at risk, being monitored etc..1 -
I heard of a potential card alternative early on. But not hearing anything about that now.
