I
dohaveextra costs associated with being disabledbut none of the perks (to help me meet those extra costs).MW, "disability support" IS a perk and people should be used to austerity by now -we've had 15 years of it!
Millions of disabled claimants like myself no longer receive an incapacity award because of systemic maladministration at DWP. We know they plan to level up working-age benefits for ALL claimants and restrict disability premiums for under-22s. This a far bigger attack on disabled people imo. I am far more worried about the people who come after you and I are long gone!
Like the non-changes to PIP we agonised over, this feels like another distraction from the high speed UC train coming down the line.

"Motability is not a luxury. It is essential for those who cannot use public transport."
I wish the DWP understood that. I never could use public transport or taxis and was completely reliant on a very specific type of vehicle to drive myself to buy food and access basic healthcare. The DWP decided that I do not score any points for Mobility because I could still drive myself locally.
I have since lost the ability to drive altogether, partly because I couldn't access the type of vehicle I needed. I obviously still can't use public transport. That also means that I cannot buy food or collect prescriptions or access healthcare myself at all now. I am now reliant on one older family member, who lives 30+ minutes away, to do any tasks for me that require driving. Obviously they won't be around forever and I don't have any option for even getting food after they go.
The Motability scheme is not a fair scheme. Many on it do take advantage by choosing cars above their requirements that they would never have been able to justify at full price, even if they could afford them. And there are many others like myself who really need access the scheme but could not do so because of the very narrow minded nature of the PIP Mobility descriptors and the fact that Motability do not allow any manual applications to be made outside the PIP awards.
I can see both sides of the current argument. I do believe that luxury brands could be removed from the scheme without causing hardship to the majority of users. However, the problem I have with it is that they appear to be basing this on vehicle value. That is not fair on the people who need Motability the most, people needing WAV's. Obviously WAV's are very expensive, and they are also the main bulk of users who won't have any other transport options such as choosing smaller vehicles. Once again the government has found a reasonable way of saving a bit of money, but applied it in completely the wrong way!
