they have just introduced this to verify a persons account. Santander bank did it to me the other week as well.

Seriously who in the uk has an ILR permit or residency permit let alone a work permit if born here.

What on earth! It's popping up everywhere, this requirement to upload ID with no actual valid reason for doing it. Why do Amazon need this to buy anything? Lots of these things happening all of a sudden.

it is big brother watching I think. Could understand if I was a seller on there.

I have an account overseas and recently I was asked to verify my identity for that bank. If I find the email I will post it. The email states the reason is that they trade in USD. Sonia wants to know about me a non American citizen using a bank outside USA. I think many will go back to a floor or wall safe

ILR is what people have residency permit Indefinite leave to remain or a BRP British residents permit

sorry about earlier my AI died and I rely heavily on it to communicate.

It should have said my overseas bank asked for my identity as USA demanded it

I disagree as I have never sold anything on line.

    this according to AI:

Amazon's UK ID verification process depends on the reason.

For account recovery, you may need to upload a government-issued ID. For selling, verification usually involves submitting business and identity documents through Seller Central or Amazon Pay, which can take up to ten days or longer. For student verification, you'll need to email a specific student ID or document to a dedicated Amazon address

Also, if you are claiming a refund for a high valuable object, you could be asked to provide id verification.

and there’s nothing in Amazon terms and conditions regarding id verification for customers as a default setting nor anything in the news.

@jonf Just wondered if you were ordering something age restricted, like kitchen knives or alcohol.

I had a similar experience with another company. They asked for ID online, but I was absolutely firm, I don’t share personal identification with retailers, full stop.

Rather than lose the sale, they agreed I could just show ID to the delivery driver on arrival. Funny how flexible things become once they realise you’re ready to walk away.

This all sounds a bit odd. Saucepans have not made the age restricted list as far as I know.
Go to your Amazon account and check the messaging centre. If the request genuinely came from Amazon, they will have sent a message there. If you find one, you can contact them directly to ask why they are asking for ID.

If there is no message, it is not Amazon. I would then send a message with a copy of what you received so they can investigate.

And if they really are asking for ID, I would tell them exactly where they can put their saucepans and order from Lakeland instead. They have nice saucepans and you do not even need an account to use them. You can just check out as a guest.

    @jonf

I also found this as a possible explanation:

    • Account security or payment issues:Occasionally, Amazon may ask for identity verification if there are security concerns with your account or to verify a new payment method, to prevent fraud or money laundering.

Customs regulations: For international orders, some countries' customs offices require the recipient to provide specific identification details before releasing a delivery.

while I am not worried about them asking for identity. Amazon need to realize that they’ll does not have work permits or residency cards as of yet. Not for uk born peeps.
