Moving into self employment from being on full UC & PIP - Where do I start?
Hello everyone,
I am reaching out in the hope that anyone else has been through the process of moving from full UC & PIP to self employment.
I have some ideas and aspirations on where to go with my business. I feel with my ailments I will never be able to work to the rigid PAYE commitments and schedules. I need to work for myself and have the flexibility to manage the issue of 'no two days are the same' nature of my conditions.
I am absoloutely terrified of even opening up lines of comms with DWP and them jumping on the 'capacity' bandwagon. I want to work but if its not accessible for me it will just crumble. But now it feels like im in this 'all or nothing bracket', that if i reach out to them for advise and support for becoming self employed etc they will just presume capacity and cut my financial support.
Please let me know if anyones been through this process!!
Thank you,
Bri

Hi our son is on full pip, UC with LCWRA and is self employed. He only does a couple of hours a week as that is all he can manage. I have to be honest UC have been great so far and I had a 5 minute call from a lovely lady who went through everything with me as his appointee. Every month he gets a notification to declare his income from self employment and it’s really easy. You take off any expenses and if you earn over £1000 you have to declare sole trader or self employment to HMRC. We did that as we knew he may go over. It does not affect you LCWRA if that’s the group you are in and they sent a message to say he was not classed as gainfully employed and will continue to stay in LCWRA and won’t have to meet the minimum income floor or any work commitments. Hope this helps.

Hello lovely,
Thank you so much for your reply. I really need to talk to people within the community who have gone through the same thing.
How did you initially open up lines of commuincation with UC / PIP about being self employed? The issue I have is that they will just say 'well if you have capacity for xyz you have capacity for work' and ill be in PAYE before i know it and get really sick.
Im on no capacity to work or yes like the UC where you dont have to look for work and full PIP.
Kind regards

no problem, are you on LCWRA and are you able to say on here what it is you would like to do for self employment. Our son already had permitted work on ESA but that does not transfer over to U.C. As long as whatever you are doing does not contradict your reason for being found LCWRA.

Hello again thanks for the reply.
Yes I am, and full PIP. I dont get ESA or anything to that affect. I was hoping to start an online coaching business essentially, helping other disabled clients with their health.
What does your son do and how did you go about speaking to them about it?
Thank you

Our son writes and composes music. He only mangaes a couple of hours a week. You can call them but I am not sure if they would tell you to put it in your journal. I have included a link for a video from a lady who I have had info from on youtube.

Actually this one is probably better as it's for people on LCWRA,

You're a god send. I feel I should be able to reach out to DWP and be honest of my intentions based on this video. They just frighten me to be honest.
