Im sorry for your loss and i suspect this behaviour by the vets is not making your grief any easier.
I would complain about the lack of transparency regarding prices.
Watchdog have investigated vet practices due to exorbitant pricing
The CMA followed this and have also been investigatied them and produced a document into vets practices and the lack of transparency to clients.

How can anyone complain about a bill for services rendered?

They would have charged triple if you had pet insurance small animals earn more money for them than farms nowadays there in the business to make money regardless of people's feelings

Catherine, I’m really sorry you are facing this on top of losing Fifi. If you have the energy, it might help to ask the vets for a clear breakdown of the bill. I do wonder if part of it could be cremation costs, as those can be surprisingly high.
Vets often lump things under one heading, so seeing it itemised might make the whole picture a bit easier to understand. Sending you a virtual hug. xx

Sorry for your loss. My nieces dog was hit by a car 2 years ago. Apart from a brief history the first thing they took was my credit card number. I asked at every encounter how much each thing would cost, including observations. Fortunately my niece had good insurance cover, but it was a kerfuffle and had to pay upfront then claim back. Vets are a business. I think they take advantage of how much we love our pets, however I understand that medical expertise, equipment, etc is expensive. Asking for a breakdown of the bill is a good idea.

Catherine21 Sorry for your loss, it’s even made worse when you received a big vet bill. Back in the spring I took my 20 year old cat Kiara to our vets. She wouldn’t allow the 2 nurses to take a blood sample. So they asked if I’d leave her a couple of hours they’d take her upstairs to the cat hospital. After giving her medication to calm her down they managed to get her bloods. I was only charged for the medication and blood tests. Her 2 hour hospital stay was free. I agree someone here said ask for a breakdown of the bill. Also point out you should have been made aware about any fees a curing for leaving fifi with them. Sending love ❤️ and hugs 🤗 Xx

Honestly at moment in time I dont want to look at anything im quiet upset as 10 days before fifi passing they suggested I have fifi teeth done stating will give her extra years and that they would do all tests before hand so she had loads of teeth removed and ten days later she was gone

They should have advised you there was a cost to keeping fifi in the practice. To not tell you, then just send a bill by email is shocking.

@Catherine21 thank you for explaining that you paid the cremation costs I thought they might be included in the bill. I now completely understand why you feel upset and angry, it’s a huge amount of money on top of losing Fifi, especially after the dental work you paid out for.
If I were in your position, I would ask the practice for a detailed breakdown of the bill. That should make clear whether the fee covers sedation, monitoring, or other services that weren’t explained at the time. If they failed to give you those costs upfront, you have grounds to raise a complaint about the lack of transparency and to dispute the charge.
Hopefully the practice will resolve this directly, but if not, you can contact the Client Mediation Service for Vets. It’s free, and they’ll act on your behalf. See link below.

Oh thankyou so kind yes I think i will do this thankyou x

Catherine just to add, once you have got the breakdown, make sure you email the practice to confirm you are disputing the charges. Under UK law, a debt that’s in dispute cannot be passed to a collection agency, so putting it in writing protects you while the complaint is investigated.

My nieces dog was fine. No broken bones or surgery just kept her in for about 35 hours and monitored her, but it cost £600+ before we left for the night. I have no idea what the final bill was. I just used my credit card initially to get the ball rolling.
