Paper Assessment

Hi everyone. Hope your day is going well. I am a tad worried, well, more than a tad. I am very anxious as I received a text message to say my PIP assessment has been completed and I will get a decision in the next two weeks. I wasn't due for renewal until April. I haven't had an assessment, so I am assuming it's paper-based.

I am due to be paid in a week, and I don't know if I will be paid if they award me nothing. Is PIP paid in arrears, or will I just get paid nothing if they stop it? If my mobility stops, how long do I get to send the car back?

I used to think, wouldn't it be nice not to be put through another phone assessment, as it causes me tremendous anxiety, but now I am wondering if a paper-based one is worse, as I don't get a chance to delve deeper into how my daily living affects me. Just so worried and scared right now, and I am not sure what happens if they stop my PIP. Any advice would be appreciated.

By the way, the text said not to ring up, which is cruel, as I will be worried sick for up to two weeks or I will find out next week if my payments stop.

Despite what the message says, you can ring and ask but they won't always give the information out over the phone.

Thanks for your quick reply. I am not sure I can ring due to severe anxiety, which stops me from making simple phone calls to the doctors and such. My head is spinning now. I am so worried that my car which is my only source of independence will be taken away, and I know this is strange, at the same time, I am thinking, well, if they do take it away I won't have to worry about what the government are saying or doing around PIP, because I am fed up with hearing about the way they label people and treat people in receipt of it.

I just wanted to add, regarding motorbility you can ask them if you keep the vehicle if in anyway you need to appeal. They won't take it off you until your appeal is complete.

Hopefully it doesn't come to that, and you have been awarded again but just wanted to give you some piece of mind.

Let us know how you get on, fingers crossed.

That is so kind of you to let me know that. I doubt I will appeal, not because my conditions are any better, but because emotionally and physically, I am on an empty fuel tank. Excuse the pun.

I can sympathetise with that, PIP is a stressful and gruelling process fighting and proving what your entitled too. But don't let them win or bully you.

    Hopefully its good news.

    Take care.

    Hello wkd,

I'm sorry your feeling like this, I had the exact same message and i did call them at 9am the lines are less busier and the call was answered within 5 minutes, a lovely lady answered and told me the outcome over the phone and explained everything in detail.

It's worth giving them a call, fingers crossed it the news you want.

Thanks for those kind words. I am just not sure I can ring them due to anxiety. Hopefully, the letter will arrive sooner rather than later if I can't ring them in the interim period.

You have had a paper based assessment meaning you have sent in enough information and evidence not to warrant an assessment. Keep calm and you can call PIP for the decision, letting them know you are stressed waiting for the letter. Hopefully your award has been renewed and I am sure it has been with no contact. Nothing will change until you get the decision letter. If you have to appeal, you will be able to keep the car. You could try the automated PIP payment line that will give details of your next payment, a clue to the decision you await.… I was replying this afternoon but I did not press "Post Comment".....

    The PIP Automated Payment Line

The PIP automated payment line allows claimants to check the date and amount of their next Personal Independence Payment (PIP) without speaking to an agent. This service is accessible via a phone menu system.

To use the automated payment line, dial 0800 121 4433 and follow these steps:-

Select 1 for English (or 2 for Welsh).

Press 6 to access the automated payment information.

Follow the prompts to verify your identity by answering security questions.

Once verified, the system will provide details about your next payment, including the amount and date.

Hi, thanks for your reply. I really appreciate it. As you mentioned, I have had no contact, not even a telephone call, so this was completely unexpected. I will try the automated line tomorrow, tried it tonight, and it closes when the offices close.

Update, I have rang the automated line, and it tells me I get paid the same next week, but that doesn't reflect motability as it is deducted. I couldn't bring myself to talk to someone; my anxiety got the better of me. I don't know the accuracy of the information, as I believe PIP is paid in arrears. I guess I will have to wait for the letter. Happy Thanksgiving to everyone today.

I phoned today and my pip, according to the automated line, is the same amount due next week, but only reflects the daily living side. I will call again tomorrow and see if it's the same, as I heard it can take up to 48 hours to reflect any change. Also, I am not sure what happens to payments if stopped, as it's paid in arrears, so I am not sure if that amount might be that, although that would be pro rata, I think.

I've tried to look on the forum for similar experiences, but I can't really find much about what happens if your pip stops and what happens to final payments

I wish I could help but I have never used the PIP Automated Line. My last review I was lucky to get a 10 year award and because of it I don't get contacted so I don't need to use any PIP facilities.

The amount due to you will be correct as the mobility element is paid to motability. I genuinely think you should make a nice cup of tea and relax as I am certain you have nothing to worry about. The payments have not stopped!

I think the worry is that it was totally out of the blue, and I suffer from severe anxiety, which I find hard to control. I was expecting a long wait for an assessment; my award wasn't due to finish until April 2026. So it's nearly 6 months early, with no actual assessment, which is really strange, as there are meant to be backlogs. I need something stronger than a cup of tea. Congrats on your 10-year award. I think everyone should get 10 years so they don't have to worry about the next review,

and if their circumstances change within those 10 years, they can advise PIP

Yes, but PIP look to send out forms months prior, they have looked at your award and seen it is one that can be cleared with a paper based assessment and a continuation of your award. It has happened before. They ask that what you type within this forum is fact and I think this is fact in your case!

Hoping you're right, thanks for the positive vibes, they are appreciated. I rang the automated line today, and it was the same, but I know you can't rely on that, and my anxiety won't let me talk to a human. It is what it is. I have to wait for the award letter. I hate my anxiety for making me powerless to do simple things. I won't be ringing tomorrow as the automated line is linked to their opening times. I am feeling a bit more positive after your kind words. Thank you!

Thank you. Relax over the weekend, we can't do anything until next week! Thanks also for your comments on my 10 year award, a lot more claimants should get the same, like you!

When I get the letter, I will let everyone know the outcome. I like to share my experiences with PIP with people so it can help them and hopefully alleviate some worry. I think the thing about PIP is that it seems to be the only benefit where you can't actually get a definite answer straight away. You would think that PIP would be the department where they would give you an answer immediately, as they are dealing with a lot of people who suffer from anxiety; they can't help but worry until it physically makes them ill. It's just my thoughts on the process and what I have read on this forum, where people are beside themselves with worry. I have to thank PIP, though, for not putting me through an assessment this time; to that end, I am lucky.
