I am on benefits disability & pip high rate. Also on universal credit. At the moment it is me and my husband and daughter. She is 16 in college. We have a three bedroom house. Which we all occupy one room each. I have incontinence so that's why separate rooms. The problem is my son is moving in with us and wife and two children one is 8 month the other is 3yrs. They are going to be homeless at the end of this month. As his income can't stretch for rent bills food nappies and so on. He earns 24000 a year. I know it will be over crowded. But the have no where to go. I can only offer them one bedroom. As we will need to keep two for ourselves. I also get housing and council tax. Please can you let me know as I really want to do what's right

    Hi,

This sounds like a difficult situation. I can't see a question in your post though, so I'm unsure exactly what you'd like to be advised on?

Hi @Bokhari27 and welcome to the community. Are you concerned about your son and his family moving in affecting your benefits? It won't affect your PIP, but you would need to let UC know that they're moving in which may affect the amount you get. Here is some information for you https://www.scope.org.uk/advice-and-support/moving-house-benefits-uc .

If it's something else you'd like help with just let us know.

Ok. Your PIP won't be affected because that is just for you.

Your UC won't be affected because that is just for your immediate family - yourself, your husband and daughter. Your son's income shouldn't be taken into account as his family are separate for this purpose.

Housing could be affected. If you live in Social Housing and are not currently paying bedroom tax, then you may have to pay that if your son moves in. I am not sure whether your existing bedroom disregard will still count in this circumstance.

Council Tax Reduction shouldn't be affected because you get PIP. That means the usual non-dependant deduction shouldn't apply in this case.

Hello @Bokhari27. My reply assumes you get the housing element of Universal Credit (rather than Housing Benefit paid separately).

Universal Credit can reduce your housing element if a non-dependant adult (an adult relative or friend) lives with you, this is sometimes called a 'non-dependant deduction' or referred to as a 'housing cost contribution'. However, there should be no deduction if you get PIP daily living. You can read more about this here: Non-dependant deductions and UC.

Even if your housing element is not impacted, you should need to report the change to UC.

Your Council Tax Reduction is likely to change, so you should report the change to your local council and they’ll issue a new calculation.

Your PIP should be unaffected by them living with you.

I hope that helps, but if anything is unclear or you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.
