Jobless at 31 and scared of what to do

I'm 31 years old, never worked but tried so hard to find jobs over the years. Am shy, partially deaf with tinnitus scared that I will never work and am on universal credit. I barely get interviews and when I speak about it to family, told to just put up with it

Surely you could work from home? I have tinnitus and kidney operations and arthritis operations in the past, but that's never been a barrier not to work.

I've met loads of people like you in work places, who I may say cope very well with their problems, are you on UC because you can't find work?. Seems a long time to be out of work, that would do my head in to be honest. Try and find a group that also has traits like yourself and get chatting with them. Maybe they can help you find work or an hobby that leads you into work and maybe happiness, you won't be alone with your problems I can assure you.

    Have you spoken to RNID?

Do you have a work coach at the Job Centre?

Even if you're on LCWRA help is available https://www.gov.uk/government/news/ramped-up-job-support-for-people-on-sickness-benefits

    Hi @Daniel31

I'm sorry to hear you're having a difficult time job hunting. It feels demoralising and I understand.

Scope have a Support to Work programme which might be worth exploring. I've included the link here.

Hi @Daniel31, welcome to the community. Sorry to hear you've struggled to find work. It's never to late to start, so I hope some of the links other members have posted above are helpful to you.

It doesn't sound like your family are being very supportive, and that's not easy either. It can be really tough facing rejection all the time. Applying for jobs can get so exhausting after a while.

As well as the employment support that Sara posted about, there's a few disability friendly employers here on our website: https://www.scope.org.uk/advice-and-support/disability-friendly-employers

Have you got any ideas about what kind of jobs you'd like to do? I hope you can find some support to get working soon ☺️
