Cancel/change claim

I currently recieve pip and the award ends at the end of this year. I am autistic, have chronic pain and mental health issues. My claim is mainly for my mental health, when I first claimed I couldn’t leave the house now I am beginning to be able to and my condition is improving after support and help. I want to cancel my claim as I don’t want to get into trouble and the stress of pip full stop makes me feel worse. How do I cancel it? I also receive new style esa and lwrca, I haven’t ever had a review for these what do I need to do? Thank you.

Why not wait for your review and see if you are still entitled. People have relapses, so it isn’t always advisable to cancel until you are 100 % sure your improvement will last.

thank you for your comment. I completely agree and it was a concern of mine as my mental health can be very up and down, I think my main reason for wanting to cancel now was the worry of my award being seen as potential ‘fraud’ as my mental health condition has come such a long way. Eg before I couldn’t leave the house, now I am able to do this (albeit this does have a big affect on me once I’m home in my safe space space) but I’d had to be seen out and then accused of not telling the truth.

I think I’m just worried I could get into trouble as my mental health has improved and I don’t want to be accused of fraud.

I think I’m just worried as I don’t want to be accused of fraud as previously I couldn’t leave the house and now I’m slowly beginning to again.

I just worry I will look dishonest as my mh has changed for the better

Even if your mental health has improved this does not mean that you are entitled to PIP. It may be that you would still score enough points to be awarded PIP. You also mentioned that you have chronic pain so it is likely that you would be awarded points for the impact that this has on your daily living activities.

thank you that’s really helpful. Would a change of circumstances be better then? My claim states I couldn’t leave the house as previously I couldn’t but now I can I don’t want to be seen leaving my house and get into trouble

You could submit a change of circumstances @wanderingwarrior_82 but there is the risk that your award could be reduced or stopped completely. As you have chronic pain, I wonder how much of the award was based on that? Does your pain still affect you in the same way each day?

a lot of my award was based on my mental health rather than my chronic pain, I’ve read back through my assessment and most of it is based on my mental health needing assistance in the house and not being able to leave the house at that time.

Ok. Are you certain that you won't relapse again? You might feel better now but you could deteriorate again. I understand you being concerned about fraud but mental health isn't easy to predict and I wouldn't want you to lose your award when you might need it again.

I’m not certain, as you say mental health isn’t easy to predict but equally how do I let them know I can now leave the house and do more without doing a coc. It’s a really difficult one :( I’m terrified of getting into trouble but that’s probably my anxiety as well. I’m also considering cancelling my esa and lwrca.

Hi @wanderingwarrior_82 - I appreciate your concerns, however, as when you initially claimed PIP, it is about how you were 3 months ago, & do you expect to be the same in 9 months time? I think the future part is as yet unknown.

You are doing nothing wrong, so I'd ask you to consider how you might be in several months time, &, if nothing else, wait.

Please also look at the descriptors/activities that are looked at with PIP. It's great that you are now able to leave your home, but you say that this has an effect upon you when you get back home.

Please don't worry about being able to go outside. As PIP is about how you are more than 50% of the time, can you go out as often as you'd wish, do you need any support to do so & can you do so 'reliably,' for example without the consequences you mention once back home?

You should let the DWP know if you are doing so much better, & expect this to continue for a further 9 months, AND that this would reduce your award. Some improvements, whilst great, wouldn't reduce your award.

    Please see: https://pipinfo.net/activities/planning-and-following-journeys

You may find that you should have a similar amount of points for this 'Mobility' activity that you already have even if your current ability remained the same for some future 9 months. It's only worth cancelling if in the future you feel you should have less than 8 points, which would then reduce your current award to none. You can do this by reporting a 'Change of circumstance.'

thank you so much for the above information that is really reassuring and helpful. As you can probably tell my anxiety is pretty but and I do over think a lot of things. I see so much in the media about people being followed and seen out, I’d hate for them to say ‘you said you couldn’t leave the house yet here you are’. It’s only a recent thing, but yes I can go out alone now (normally with someone) but I do manage alone as well. When I get back home though it really does affect me a lot as I’ve mentioned but obviously if I was being followed they wouldn’t see this part. I have really bad social anxiety and paranoia which isn’t helping.

I'm glad all the information has been reassuring for you. Do you think you'll wait until your review?

I’m honestly unsure at the moment, if I wait to the review and I feel I no longer need it can I just not reply to the forms?

You can let them know that you no longer wish to claim as you feel your health has improved. The decision is yours but just bear in mind that your condition may deteriorate again.

Is it true they they follow people and watch them?

They might conduct surveillance on someone if they suspect fraud, but it isn't common. I used to worry about it just like you but what I tried to tell myself is that they don't see how I am after I've been out, they don't see the struggle to just get out of the door. It would be very difficult for them to accuse you of fraud based on your anxiety. An example that is more obvious would be someone saying they are confined to a wheelchair yet are seen playing tennis every week.

I know you'll probably worry anyway as I'm exactly the same, but try not to. They won't be watching you and you're not doing anything wrong.

thank you that’s a really good way of looking at it and explaining, anxiety/depression is very complex and healing isn’t linear. I’m just trying to get better at the end of the day and hopefully when the renewal comes round I won’t have to re apply. Will they cancel automatically if I don’t respond to the renewal forms when they come?
