Social Services - advice wanted
I would like to ask for advice on behalf of a friend.
My friend is a vulnerable woman with learning difficulties, but is able to live independently. She has been divorced from her abusive ex husband for many years.
She has 2 adult daughters, also with learning difficulties, who were being cared for by her ex husband.
Until recently, she saw her daughters on a regular basis. However, this stopped at the end of 2025, when her daughters were removed from her ex husband by social services and taken into adult social care.
Social services have been appalling from start to finish:
- They sent my friend's address to her abusive ex husband, so now he knows where she lives. Surely this is a GDPR breach?
- They have never sent my friend any letters or information explaining what was happening with her daughters, in spite of repeatedly promising to do so, and being chased up many times.
- The social worker responsible for the case has never returned any of my friend's calls.
- The social worker has claimed that my friend does not care about her daughters, which is obviously incorrect.
- Rude, bullying and abusive behaviour from the social worker and care staff towards my friend and her daughters.
- They did not inform my friend about a family court hearing regarding her daughters' welfare, then criticised her for not being there. How on earth is she supposed to turn up to a court hearing that she is not aware of?
- Now they have cut off all contact with her daughters, with no explanation regarding why.
Both my friend and her daughters have stated that they want to see each other, but their wishes have been ignored by social services and care staff.
There is a very real risk that my friend will never see her daughters again, through no fault of her own.
She is distraught and does not know what to do.
Please help! Any advice welcome.

Hello and welcome to our forum.
I'm sure you will get some advice about the best course of action to take from a member of the Scope Team tomorrow (during working hours). There may be a forum member who can give you links to family support services this evening.

I would report the social worker pronto… I know from past experience that some social workers are incompetent Clowns who'd struggle to run a bath much less a competent service.
I just unfortunately know that even if you do report them, senior social services won't do anything, they look after their own.

Hi @funky_d and a warm welcome to the community from me!
I'm very sorry to hear about the situation your friend is facing, it sounds incredibly distressing.Like SheffieldMan suggested, your friend can file a formal complaint with the social services department and potentially escalating it to the Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman if she's not satisfied with the outcome.
As it sounds like there has been a breach of privacy, she can also report it to the Information Commissioner's Office

Many thanks for the advice - I will discuss it with my friend later today and help her to file a formal complaint.
