Out of curiosity
I do not think my gp has ever been asked for further information regarding my pip claims ever. However a very helpful GP (not my own)a few year's ago wrote a detailed letter for my MR which I included. First real help i ever got. He asked me to phone dwp and request they contact him, when I phoned the person on the dwp end laughed at me saying "We dont do that"! Upon telling this gp what was said he was furious and said "Oh yes they do and often" ,"How dare they laugh".
What exactly would it entail if dwp asked your gp to fill a form in,anyone know?

I know my GP was once contacted by PIP and filled in a form - I don’t know what she wrote but she told me the boxes they have to write in are tiny and they are on a strict deadline too. They once phoned my GP too for more info as I was in crisis and couldn’t cope with the assessment process.

My GP was contacted several times for ESA (before migrating to UC). In fact they even got my ESA stopped due to their lack of understanding of my conditions!
However, my GP was never contacted about PIP, not the first time when it went all the way to tribunal, and as far as I know, not the second time when I had a paper based review.
Perhaps the GP has mixed up PIP and ESA/UC? They are often contacted for the out of work benefits, but not for PIP.

It was definitely PIP that they contacted my GP over. It was a bit of a sorry saga. I ended up at the walk in centre and the nurse who treated me told me he had read what my GP had written and he was sure my review would be fine! With my MP’s intervention I had my face-to-face appointment cancelled and they did a paper assessment but phoned my GP for extra info. Without my GP and MP I would likely have become a statistic of how the process fails.
I have no idea if they ever contacted my GP for ESA/UC. That one has always gone smoothly for me - paper based and into the support group with no problems

Sorry, that was badly worded on my part. I meant they don't often contact GP's for PIP, so doglover's GP might have been confusing it with ESA/UC instead.
They do sometimes contact them for PIP, as in your case, but it is not often, and almost never before or during the first assessment. It sounds like your case was not a standard one due to input from the MP.
With regards to ESA, my first GP was filling in the forms and signing them off for me without a problem, but when she left the practice they then went to a different GP, which is where my problems started. He caused a huge amount of fuss about them, despite multiple emails explaining my conditions etc. Eventually I did get to the surgery and he signed them off but it was a horrendously traumatic experience (that I won't go into) which meant I could never go back to that surgery again. Then 6 months later exactly the same thing, he got more forms and wouldn't sign them off unless he could see me at the surgery. Was never going to be possible for me after the previous experience. Eventually I was forced to attend the Job Centre and go through a full WCA there instead. I could just about manage that at the time, but wouldn't be able to now, so no idea what would happen if I lost UC/LCWRA now.

Ah, sorry for misunderstanding you too.
Your ESA story is awful, I’m so sorry that GP wasn’t supportive. All in all, the system really needs to be kinder

@Catherine21 it says up on the wall of our doctors "Do not ask for letter re Esa,UC,Pip".
My gp did a scribbled note one time, when I was on dla of five short sentences and I paid her then. It was next to useless tbh.

my GP refused to do a support letter, said dwp will send them a form if they needed to for GP to fill out, they would only provide a summary of whole medical records which noted diagnosis, I added to evidence bundle but probably of no use tbh

My G.P said they have been instructed not to supply letters as it will be disregarded as evidence unless asked for by DWP

My GP has also told me this
